I fish the smaller woodlands pool I’m just getting back into this after a long long break 20 years plus. Talking to one of the lads who works there and the biggest to come of this smaller pool is 18-5 lb.
it wasn’t busy the one we were on had 10 pegs. 4 of us on there. Fish all in good nick

lads who I go with have fished the carp pool and pull em for fun on dog biscuits

also a good place over at Middlewich called Old Hough (not sure where u are located) With 7/8 waters

Holmstall Hall is a ball ache to find off the A49 then it’s a guessing game, think I’ve been 6/7 times always a different route it is sign posted. Head for Oultam Park

commercials!!! didn’t existing when I used to fish years ago. They’re a revaluation to me getting back into it. Always said I would one day!
Margin fishing (what’s that all about)
At one stage I moved, took half my pole just sat on the grass put the pole under the trees.
Bite every time 3/4lb carp in 2ft if water

edit there’s a shop on site but temp closed atm obv reasons

Cracking post DD: )

The lift float method evoked fond memories for me and my mind shot back to the 80s when I read that mate. Used to love tench fishing a small pond I fished in Denton. I'd be walking down the edge of field path eagerly anticipating catching Mr red eye, mist rolling just as dawn broke on a summers morning. First glimpse of the pond and a coot would usually greet me by squawking its head off.

Creeping to my chosen peg, usually against edge of a thick rat-tail weedbed that divided pond, hence name 'figure eight' pond. Stealth like searching for giveaway pinprick Tench bubbles that they were hungry. A small handful of sweetcorn and a few maggots before eagerly setting rod up with a small peacock waggler with bulk of shot under the eye of the float. Just a single BB about 3-6" lay on bottom with a piece bread flake attached to a 12s hook.

The lift method is so called as it's finely balanced(for benefit of others as DD knows this). By that the BB(or AAA) weight lifts the float when a fish picks up the bait as the float is delicately counter balanced by the weight near the hook. Tench are known for giving the classic bite, better than any other stillwater fish imo. A few pinprick bubbles around the float waiting for a tell tale enquiry. Float dancing about on the surface by a slight Bob or two. It was like watching Terry Griffiths taking a shot in snooker dithering about! Then a pause and another teeze or two. Jeez go on Mr tench take the bait! Arm twitching to strike but can't strike too early or I'd miss and spook him or his mates on the prowl for food.

Sitting on hands willing the bloody float to go. Eventually the float lifts up ever so slow and methodically and lays flat on the surface. Arm twitching as I'd wait for float to sail away before striking. Then bam!!! Rod tip arches round and old Mr red eye would thump on the rod tip as it lunges for the sanctuary of the weed bed less that a yard from where I'd hooked him. Eventually I'd slide the net under and have a fishing orgasm in my head. Yes, get in you beauty! And when I say beauty, a tench for me is my favourite freshwater course fish. Olive green with small red eyes and strong distinct paddle like tailfin. Holding a tench is even more slippier than a bar of carbolic soap at bathtime!

I miss fishing there. Pristine tench anywhere between 2-6lb from a small farm pond, angling bliss!

Anyone who knows a good tench fishing venue please let this old boy know as it's a while ago since I fished a proper tench water.
Brilliant ! You sound like Mr Crabtree !

Thanks mate: ) I've never read Mr Crabtree. Read books by former pioneering anglers such as Freddie Foster on the seldom used nowadays swingtip method. Ivan Marks on Waggler fishing. Benny Ashurst on Stickfloat fishing, plus a few others. I was most often on the bank trying to perfect their methods.

I hope you’ve read the Chris Yates classics.

I used to use one regular back in the 70s on places like Rudyard, Foulridge Ogden and Pilsworth reservoirs. Then the quivertip superceded it. But on it's day in windless conditions against a target board it is still a good bite detection method, especially when bream fishing.

I still have an early 80s Shakespeare Alpha 10ft(transparent amber) fiberglass rod with threaded tip eye for screw in swing/quivertips. I must dig it out sometime, find a couple of swingtips I have, and put that old rod through it's paces: )

I used to use one when I was a sprog. Barbel ledgering on the Swale. It was a little superfluous though as the Barbel bite normally resulted in a two foot twitch and the rod out of its rest.....I think that was a bite :-)

Casting at the Sun ranks up there even with BB's best stuff but, since then, whilst still very good and, in my view, the best of his generation, I don't think he's reached the same heady heights.
Yes that’s his best.

Don’t know if I’ve said before but I run the Chris Yates (“A Passion For Angling”)Facebook page. Incidentally there’s a new film featuring Chris Yates and Martin Bowler returning to the lake which inspired “The Secret Carp” book, this afternoon at 4pm.

Haha. Definitely not suitable for a savage barbel take mate, lunging for a rod butt just before it's dragged off the rod rest has happened to me many times usually when I'm having a piss.

I can't forget(may have told this tale before) when I was carp fishing over on the Ebro with my mate. Just having a few tins of beer (like you do) and he had a nice Fox carp rod and Shimano reel. We only intended grabbing an hour or so when sun was setting as we'd just done a gruelling 8 hours baking in the sun cat fishing off a boat.

Anyway we're sat there with just a rod each, bit of bait, terminal end tackle and a net. We both used a can of Estrella, butt ring perched on can for rod rest setting the baitrunner on light.

Next minute my mates baitrunner was spinning round like crazy as a carp or cat took it and as he went for the rod it somehow shot into the water just as my mate made a grab for the rod butt. Rod was dragged 30 yards or so till fish dragged it into the depths

My mate sat there fuckin' sick as a chip..... "Nevermind mate things could be worse" I quipped....... "How d'ya mean"? He asked..... "We'll, you may of lost your rod but I managed to grab your tin of beer before it fell in the water mate"; )

He was quite bemused at my dry sarky reply before I started giggling like a girl. We had abother beer over it as he lamented his beloved rod and reel he'd just lost.
