As I said, I think a lot more stuff has been going on everyday that is more likely to contribute to a second spike than an outdoor protest. I see a lot less outrage about that from people and i think I know why.
I get the point about this being a once in a generation opportunity to push for real change, and fully support the cause. I respect the decision of those who have decided this is too important an issue not to protest about today. At any other time I would be there standing alongside them. It just seems unwise to have a gathering on this scale at a time when the R rate is already over 1 in the North West.I dunno. The pictures make me uneasy but we've been bombarded with images of people crowding onto beaches and in parks for a couple of weeks now. This is the first chance in years where a lot of people feel their chance to be heard and I feel like it's not really for me to judge on whether they should be doing this or not. People will argue that racism has been killing people for generations and will continue to do so if we don't act. It sort of feels like a once in a generation opportunity to be heard and I can understand why on balance people want to take it. Even though I'm anxious about what's happening, i just feel like it isn't the place of a white person to say "not now".
I still think this is a lot less dangerous than seeing people crammed into trains and buses. And I think politicians working in windowless chambers at parliament is far more dangerous than people protesting outside.
As someone who has had to observe lockdown stringently due to shielding my parents, I've grown pretty weary of a lot of behaviour I've seen in recent weeks. This isnt something I can feel angry about though and if we see a second spike I think it will be more to do with people returning to indoor spaces without the correct controls in place rather than stuff like this. Unfortunately, I think people will blame these protestors.
Perhaps if we had our world class track and trace system in place it could have helped contain any potential transmissions at events like this.
Absolutely BH.Apart from picking the missus up from the shopping I have not ventured out at all.I tell a lie ... I`ve visited my 93 year old Mum but I`ve sat outside as she sits in her chair in the hall.presume this also goes for those who crammed on to beaches last weekend ?
You`re a ****. ;)You can bank on it, and I am happy to call Cummings a ****, equally happy to call each and every one of these a **** as well.
Oh here we go. Give me an example of stuff that is going to contribute more?
We are nothing like the US!As a society we’re doomed. What happened in the US was a disgrace. There is racism in the US and in the UK and it needs to be addressed. But having a mass social gathering in the current climate is two fingers to everyone who so observantly followed the lockdown and the NHS. I’m guessing the lack of media outrage is due to it not fitting their agenda?
Well I'm sure they will be seen to have made a wise decision when we go back into lockdown and people who follow the rules are infected by those who think that demonstrating is more important than human life. The loss of George Floyd's life was lamentable but the virus is a matter of life and death for thousands
Well like i said, parliament returning and all of those people working in a windowles room together poses a much higher transmission risk than an outdoor protest. Especially when you factor in the example it sets to lots of other workplaces that will needlessly return too. The second spike will be a lot more down to what's happening indoors, in lots of clusters unseen by TV cameras, rather than what's happening outdoors, of that I'm sure.
To reiterate, these huge gathering do make me anxious. But I'm hoping it's not as bad as it looks. People aren't touching things and exchanging things. A lot are wearing masks.
Anyway, the world class track and trace system that was delivered on time by the govenrnment on 1st June will reveal the sources of any further outbreaks, so time will tell.
Not trying to be flippant here, but it will be interesting to see what happens in the next 3/4 weeks. We were told there would be a big spike from the VE day celebrations and there wasn't. Hospital admissions are still going down 2 weeks after the 'Bank Holiday Madness' as well. So I wonder what it says if there is no upward movement in those statistics in the next month?I wonder how many extra people will die as a result of the UTTER WANKERS packed into Parliament Square today? 100? 1,000? 10,000?
Fucking cunts, every single one of them. Cunts.

I’ll admit to going today, wore a face mask and tried to keep a couple of feet away from people which I’ll accept was difficult to do and didn’t always happen, I just felt today needed to be done and we can’t be waiting around and letting this opportunity and the momentum garnered slip away. It’s time to change things.I get the point about this being a once in a generation opportunity to push for real change, and fully support the cause. We are nothing like the US!
I actually can’t think of a nation that is more multiculturally open and safe than the U.K. in the entire world. Racism in this country is next to nothing compared to most nations.
Some of the black-on-black racism and genocide that goes on in some African countries just because one part of the population happens to be of a different black ethnicity to another makes the U.K. look like an angel state.
Haven’t 42 deaths been attributed to the Liverpool v Atlético game?Well like i said, parliament returning and all of those people working in a windowles room together poses a much higher transmission risk than an outdoor protest. These people protesting should give a thought to when they return home to their elderly parents and grandparents and if and when they pass on the virus have a good long look in the mirror and be totally ashamed of themselves as they are knotting their black ties for the funeralsWell, there are extenuating circumstances that lessen the likelihood of mass infection:
1) There will be plenty of mask being worn
2) It's an extremely windy day.
Of course, both factors inhibit the direct impact of infection but doesn't completely rule it out.
Most infections are delivered in recirculated air.
As @Mon Autre says, in my view correctly, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to foster change or, again in my view, the opportunity will be lost.
I would be there myself as invited to, but have thought better due to my wife's heart complications.
I totally get where you're coming from. As I said, the scenes make me uneasy too. The reason I replied to you rather than some of the other people voicing concerns about it is that I know I'd get a far more reasoned and pragmatic exchange about it and something closer to how I feel about it. But like I say, we probably have a bigger problem with what's what's going on on packed out public transport and poorly planned out workspaces than at something like this.
It's been drummed into us to feel anxious about gatherings of this scale, so its a normal reaction. But I just think everyone needs to be a bit open minded about why this is happening (and I think you are to be fair). Racism is pervasive and never ending for people. It will continue to kill and deny opportunities to people long after covid19 so I understand why it's happening and I can't condemn the people protesting. I do really hope that people were taking the best measures they could though.
I know I'm going to get loads of shit for what I'm saying. I'm going to try and resist to say much more and get drawn into arguments with other posters who disagree with me. Ive had a shit week and a lot of this stuff is bringing me down now. I didn't really want to argue, I just wanted to at least put another perspective out there in the midst of a lot of angry posts. Like it's good to at at least see all sides
The government and the opposition in this country are a collection of self serving cretinous cunts, so please do not lower yourself to expecting or using the excuse of expecting the government to set any kind of example, or indeed trying to fool me into thinking you are that thick.
You are also fully aware that as proved by the LC final, the Scum v Atletico game and Cheltenham that out door events and gatherings can indeed cause significant spread of Covid and nor has anyone managed to provide a scrap of evidence that wearing a bog standard face mask or covering is anymore use than an ash tray on a motorbike.
There really can be no defence whatsoever of what is taking place on the streets of London and Manchester. Had it happened in this country then there may have been some justification but still it would be totally unacceptable under the current circumstances.
You`re a ****. ;)
