George Floyd murder | Clashes between US police and protestors

I am inclined to wonder where all the outrage is at police brutality in countries like China, where it’s far worse than the States.
Oh it's there. Trust me.

Other issues have taken precidence at the minute, but I for one also stand by those in Hong Kong. Surprised there's not a thread on it already TBH.

You're speculating on whether they have or haven't thought about how to return home; to wash hands, bathe, shower, etc.

Bit silly to do so.
Not really.
You could argue the same for any event.
Point is we are all told to do these things regardless and be individually and socially responsible and follow the guidelines.
Self regulation is being relied on.

My parents aren’t alive but my wife’s are and both are in the extremely vulnerable category. She works in IKea and they open next week.
She does carer for her Dad also and she has no control over anyone who comes into that shop next week. Doesn’t know where they’ve been, who they’ve been in contact with at whatever event.
Get the picture.
It’s not unique. Everyone has a story.

Personally although I have empathy for the cause, I don’t think those that called for the march thought through any other expression of solidarity that would be more socially beneficial in this pandemic lockdown.

It's weird reading this thread because there are some seriously legitimate points regarding the protests on the fronts of why they need to happen, specifically due to racism, police brutality, and police discrimination towards the black populace, obviously all centered in the US.

However, there are also some seriously legitimate points from people who are against these protests, extremely much so the ones with Covid fears.

The whole not dying of coronavirus is as important to some people as racial equality (equity?) is to some others. Given it's almost certain people who hold in regard one of these two things so seriously still understand the magnitude of the other, it seems a serious shame that this has descended into such a black and white debate, no pun intended.

This is my pie in the sky thinking, but I just wish there were some sort of compromise. All of those out there campaigning for justice and equal rights need to be heard and admired for being willing to fight for what they believe in. All of those who are doing everything they can to avoid a coronavirus outbreak need to be heard and respected too. If there could just be some communication then maybe we'd realise that most of us are on the same side here, just with different priorities. But knowing that we could somehow work together to come up with a way to get the respective messages across and not step on each others' toes. I'm sure there's a way for protests to still be safe on the viral front. I don't know how, but if we got our heads together we could do.

I don't know if it's the media's fault (people aren't blameless too), but it feels like either you care about racial inequality and not the coronavirus, or the coronavirus and not racial issues. At least that's how it looks to me, and it would to many others, even if the truth is obviously more complex. This all feels like one big genius deflection tactic.

The murder of Lee Rigby isn't really comparable to that of George Floyd. Have a think about it. To suggest there are differences in no way dimishes what happened to Lee Rigby.
I don't think anyone said it was, it was a deliberate murder by terrorist scum.

I wouldn't want to equate the two things at all, and I fully understand why people are upset by what happened to George, but read my post above.

My local police were (forced) out in force today, trying to protect it's own residents from causing themselves and others (namely their own families) potential harm in the middle of a pandemic, and the protesters were carrying placards saying "stop police brutality", when there has been none here (to my knowledge), it's beyond ironic really.

Deciding to go after the press will go down as the police's biggest fuck up here. It's one of the things that has turned this from BLM to needing police reform for everybody.

According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, from May 26th to June 6th 12 PM there have been:

• 328+ total press freedom incidents

• 54+ arrests

208 assaults (173 by police)

• 45 equipment/newsroom damage

Assault category breakdown:

• 73 physical attacks (47 by cops)

• 49 tear gassings

• 25 pepper sprayings

• 83 rubber bullets/projectiles

This is more than the entire past decade combined.

Meanwhile , the London police horse is asleep having made it's own way home and US cops in Buffalo are protesting in support of their colleagues who threw the old guy down and marched on. The US cops are clearly unhinged as is the US president, our leaders are not far behind but our key workers including the police and their horses retain my eternal gratitude for a job largely done well in testing circumstances.

Why do the idiots in this country have to protest american issues..... do you think america gives a fuck about shit that happens in this country? Im sure we have racial problems in this country but even the slogan "black lives matter" or "all lives matter" is ignorant and so clearly american(stupid)....why are we forgetting that we are a totally different culture with different problems. Our police are 1000x better trained than some american cops. And these shocking videos you see of american cops, we should be thankfull we arent living in fear of our own police

Kind of the point I was trying to make.

Every single one of those rioters should be locked up.

Or better still, stick them all on a wee island with their EDL counterparts and they can covid the fuck out of each other until their heart is content. Ferral scumbags.

I’d put them all on the Isle of Wight. They have a track and trace app that has been tested there.

Survival of the fittest for the Petri dish they’ve created.

Black lives do indeed matter. They always have for me. I didn’t feel the need to mingle with thousands of random people to highlight their cause in town today.

it doesn’t mean I don’t understand their pain.

I just valued my, my family, my friends and the people I don’t know’s chances of not catching Covid 19 above joining a protest.

It is just a week ago people were saying no Premier league football. A week ago people were saying how nice people were being to one another, A few days ago i was reading how BAME people were being more at risk with this deadly pandemic, and wanted questions answered.
Scroll on a few days. Thousands of BAME hit the streets to demonstrate. Policemen are attacked on the streets. 1000 footballers are tested, all negative.
Now is it just me, or are other people struggling to fill in the dots here ?
