So it’s not a disease either then?
Disease: noun
a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury.

Not the same but not that different. Plants arent to my knowledge racist

If Floyds past matters so does Churchills. Lets get that statue down
I'm not so sure Floyds past does matter tbh, but to create a fake version of him to fit a narrative seems odd. I think his legacy will be that he was just a very ordinary unremarkable bloke and not a Martin Luther or Malcolm X. That (imho) is the lasting appeal of Jesus - not the miracles, or the goal that made it a century against Southampton, but the fact he was basically 'Brian'. Few too many getting exited over a gourd today as the Pythons might say.

I always thought statues of the past were reminders of the good and bad in humans. You see one, read his/ her/ it's name, Google, and then learn something.

Tearing them down seems a bit pointless. Might as well burn books and delete the internet.

Where do you stop?
Quite. Once the outraged have had their fill of statue toppling it will be most interesting to see how many are left and have managed to clear the fairly high bar of human failings.

Apologies if already posted and discussed (this thread quite rightly moves quickly)

I am all for the removal of offensive statues that were commissioned in a different time and culture.

Is the consensus that this should apply to all statues associated with slavery? Roman and Egyptian are probably the first that would spring to mind when thinking of the next most obvious abusers of slaves.

However I do also see the point from the position of the few posters above me.

Yeah forget defeating fascism in Europe, let’s pull it down because he said some shit that was common place at the time.

What a waste of time defeating Hitler.

Sorry, I know it’s for another thread but I couldn’t help myself. All lives don’t matter, that’s the point!

“All lives matter” is probably the single most annoying thing anyone could type on the subject.
Be annoyed if you like.

All lives do matter. You cant be selective over that.

Yeah. So hands up everyone who googled and read up on Colston prior to chucking his statue in the Avon?

Only reason any fucker on here knows about Colston was because they did throw his statue in the Avon.

Shite people come out with. Fucking priceless.

Police saluted his coffin into the church, gave him a police escort out of respect,it is this kind of hypocrisy that annoys me greatly

If my colleague murders someone and I strongly feel it was wrong and I see the coffin going past and take my hat off, am I a hypocrite?

Floyds past absolutely does not matter if it is used to cheapen what happened to him. Pretty much every time someone dies we paint them in rose coloured glasses. I get that people can be frustrated with a perceived imbalance and the martyring of people who aren't saints but it can quickly create a false narrative in some minds. For example Ahmaud Arberys lynching in the street us being excused by some because he had a look around a construction site.

And if you listen to what a lot of the black community are saying it is based on Floyd being an everyman figure. It could have been them, their brother, their son. This is a common thread in all these cases.

I walked past that statue last year and looked him up, but tbf I devour knowledge. It’s one of many reasons why I’m so engaging and widely loved.

if they taught the kids in school about everyone who has a statue then that would be ok but they don't teach history like they used to anymore

For me obvious slave traders can come down, statues are monuments to greatness and duty, just because you opened a school or a park with your wealth doesn't mean you deserve a monument.

As for churchill maybe just add another plaque saying was believed in the empire before people and killed many on the indian continent, athens and Ireland but also did guide us through a war to victory over facism so please don't pull down, ta very much
