Liverpool (H) Post-Match Thread

It's such a complete joke that the law has a specific provision that if the ball hits the arm of a defender who is falling or sliding it's not a foul.

But if an attacker does it, it is.

It's a complete and utter joke.
Yer its a dogshit rule that, they need to sort that one out for sure

The stupid handball law is ridiculous IN ITS APPLICATION.

Handball - Law 12

Changes
  • Deliberate handball remains an offence
  • The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick:
    • The ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm
    • A player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm•and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
    • The ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger
    • The ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)
  • The following will not usually be a free kick, unless they are one of the above situations:
    • The ball touches a player’s hand/arm directly from their own head/body/foot or the head/body/foot of another player who is close/near
    • The ball touches a player’s hand/arm which is close to their body and has not made their body unnaturally bigger
    • If a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their body and the ground to support the body (but not extended to make the body bigger)
    • If the goalkeeper attempts to ‘clear’ (release into play) a throw-in or deliberate kick from a team-mate but the ‘clearance’ fails, the goalkeeper can then handle the ball

Explanation
Greater clarity is needed for handball, especially on those occasions when ‘non- d•eliberate’ handball is an offence. The re-wording follows a number of principles:
  • Football does not accept a goal being scored by a hand/arm (even if accidental)
  • Football expects a player to be penalised for handball if they gain possession/control of the ball from their hand/arm and gain a major advantage e.g. score or create a goal-scoring opportunity
  • It is natural for a player to put their arm between their body and the ground for support when falling.
  • Having the hand/arm above shoulder height is rarely a ‘natural’ position and a player is ‘taking a risk’ by having the hand/arm in that position, including whensliding
  • If the ball comes off the player’s body, or off another player (of either team) who is•close by, onto the hands/arms it is often impossible to avoid contact with the ball
  • When the GK clearly kicks or tries to kick the ball into play, this shows no intention to handle the ball so, if the ‘clearance’ attempt is unsuccessful, the goalkeeper can then handle the ball without committing an offence.

  • THE PROBLEM IS THE INTERPRETATION IS BEING APPLIED IN THE WRONG MANNER!!

Agree with most of what you are saying. not sure he’s showing Laporte levels of potential when he’s playing and that’s what we need but he didn’t do much wrong and plays well beyond his years, we can’t ask for much more from somebody of his age in his position.

The thing is, we don’t necessarily need him to be the first choice cb, especially not at 19. We need 4 centre backs in the squad, they’ll be rotation but there will naturally be a pecking order And even if he’s not at the top of it he can still be a success here and play a big role. His club trained status will make him invaluable

For someone his age to come off a concussion lay off straight into this game and just about manage to keep pace in just his 4th Premier League start is incredible.

When I say "on the edge of his ability" I mean his ability right now, not his potential ability. He's undoubtedly going to get better and better as he gets more experience against top opposition. It takes time and exposure to get up to the level of top players, and this was probably just about as tough a game as he could manage at this point in his development.

I think he'll start most of the rest of the season in the league and against Arsenal, and we'll see where he is then going into the Champions League. That might be a level too high for him this season, but I think he'll be a perfectly good 3rd choice CB next year if we get someone like Koulibaly who's a proper equal first choice with Laporte.
