Your neighbour is going to add two storeys to his house

I wasn't sure if this was for the politics forum (as it's this government doing it) but from next month you can add extra storeys to a house without planning permission. Can you imagine the new terrace housing in east Manchester (Beswick or New Islington) with just a few with extra storeys on top? Or your semi with your neighbour breaking through your roof to build upwards?

It wasn't even clear from the consultation whether they intended this just for blocks of flats or individual houses.

We had building work still going on next door to us thirteen months after the house was sold and work started. I think he's building a palace, or more likely refurbing to sell on.

Thing is, what do you say? It's been more annoying recently with having to work from home, and they've been working a few Sundays but you don't want to get off to a bad start with a new neighbour do you?

The only time we said anything was when some Berk rocked up on a bank holiday in may at 8am and started hammering away. I had a hangover and two kids to deal with, so went round to ask if he was aware the regs say no loud building work on a bank holiday?

He told me to get stuffed, I was being unreasonable and as he was only using a hammer it can't be that loud, can it? Luckily he was a member of the federation of master builders with his name of the side of the van so an understanding was found within five minutes.

Did you read all of it?

There are still restrictions in place.
Of course. You can add two storeys to a bungalow now with planning consent but this will just add to the uglification of towns (and villages) and to neighbour disputes. The last round of extending PD rights (office to residential) gave us tiny flats with no windows.

RIBA is appalled.
What happens to design like this when you tack on two storeys?

This will be going on left, right and centre if they introduce CGT on principle private residences to pay for COVID-19 as is being recommended by some Tories.

Our commune has regulations that includes a maximum 40% of the land allowable for habitable space so this wouldn't ever be an issue
