Stokes does too much already. Possible burn out at destroying of our best player. (See IT Botham)
Burns has no experience of captaincy and very little in test match cricket.
Broad is a hot head and thinks everything is out. He’d burn all 3 reviews in his first over.

I will go back to my point of their being no credible candidates to take over from Root in our current set up.

but like i say anybody but root and can it be really any worst ???

its should have been questioned on the last tour to Australia ? it was the worst i have seen in years and the fight was toothless

But that was his first tour there as captain, so you would probably expect a degree of leniency when marking the scorecard. We also tend to forget that ‘fight’ and ‘uncontrolled aggression’, albeit off the park, overshadowed England both in the run up to and during that Ashes tour. It was a poor performance in many ways.

its was a shambles right across the board ? the ECB was only interested in building a team for the world cup 2019 and test cricket was left on the back burner, Eoin Morgan should have been be both one day and test captain and root left to find his form and number 3 or 4 in test cricket

that tour was built up to be a close and england having a great chance in the ashes but how wrong was they ? i will always remember BT-sports bigging up our chances hahah and within a couple of weeks of the tour we had lost the ashes and everybody on the panel was spitting mad. they wanted blood and answers even it the last test they sent out jimmy anderson to try and defend the the loss and bad tour and geoffrey boycott was going mental

all great points matey
Pakistan will be up for this and have some world class as well ? yes the weather and swing will make anybody look normal when broad and anderson and woaks gets going, but pakistan have swing and reverse and always have a spinner and we all know how england play spin hahhaah

Hard to know what it will be like, and do feel for the visiting teams this summer; it must be terribly difficult for them. One would hope that England remember their willingness to come and arrange lucrative Tests/tours at the earliest juncture once this awful virus has gone.

I can see Broad/Anderson being put in tandem again at Old Trafford, but for the Second and Third Tests, I’d like to see Wood/Archer/Broad/Stokes used. By my reckoning, which is frequently off, those 4 have never played together in a Test, but if they are to be the spearhead for the Ashes, then Root needs to have experience of working them as a skipper.
Much as the winter tour to New Zealand was written off as an opportunity to create a new top order and an old-school doggedness, the final two Tests should now be used as an opportunity to hone the attack. If they only focus on winning these Tests with trusted swing, then it’ll be the same problems in Australia.

Never known an Ashes when England haven’t been lionized by the media and the Australians demonized. Even in the last series we were led to believe the Australians were in disarray and still feeling the rough of sandpapergate. As I said, I would expect Root to stand down if they lose again, but the dearth of candidates could be a concern.

I just looked at the fixture calendar, and after these Tests, England will only play 10 Tests, all against India, before the next Ashes.

anybody can be a better option than root ?

its easy to take any sort of credit for the 2.1 vs west indies and really they was not up to the challenge or fit enough for 3 quick test matches, after losing the first test we struggled in the 2nd test when time was tight and down to the last hour and won ? the 3rd test was a shoe in and the west indies was done stick a fork in them and dip your bread

mark my words when Pakistan turn up next week they should be in better shape and if the weather holds will be a lot tighter than the west indies, then the ashes come up very soon people will be jumping all over root when we get white wash 5.0 again
He played the 2nd test perfectly.

what ?? wasted time in slow batting then let the west indies get the runs to stop the follow on and then had to get runs quickly and knew rain was forecast root get luck in my book and just about won the test with 15 overs left ?

holy shit ??

what about eoin morgan being test captain before root ? did alright in the one day team
Test England 16 matches / 2 100s / 3 50s / best score 130 / average 30.43

No. I think you’re just going to have to grit your teeth until after the next Ashes series. The lack of a County season also reduces the likelihood of someone else gaining the experience to challenge Root. ;-)

am not talking now ? am talking before root was named captain

Ah. My apologies. Think Morgan’s face didn’t really fit, and he had only captained a four-day side a handful of times, most recently in 2012. Root, by contrast, had skippered a victorious Yorkshire, and it also helped that he had two Yorkshire mouthpieces championing his cause in the media.

Root is a mediocre captain but unfortunately there aren’t any outstanding candidates to replace him. Burns may be a good option in the future.

It’s difficult to be too optimistic about our chances in the Ashes down under. Whilst Pope, Crawley and Lawrence are all promising, the batting line-up still looks frail and Australia have arguably the best bowling attack in the world.

It won’t happen but I’d love to see Foakes or Bracey given an opportunity against Pakistan. Buttler has been given enough chances.

Both are in the bigger squad of players so it is possible. Foakes has Test experience already so perhaps Bracey could get a chance.

the swing and dip after the ball passed the batters was crazy in the OT test ? both keepers had a job keeping wicket and the west indies lad took a big blow to the face ? late swing and then dip is impossible to read and keep wicket, butler did ok behind the stumps but again poor with the bat and that's the big problem going forward ?

i like pope, burns, sibley, not 100% on crawley so we have pope, burns, sibley, stokes, root, and wicket keepers Foakes butler bairstow and then bowlers woods archer broad woaks anderson bess leach so not many changes for the ashes next winter and would bet 9 or 10 on that list plays the first test in the ashes 2021/22

Still think England will need have a plan A, B, and C going into the next Ashes. Not saying Denly should be recalled, but there needs to be someone that can drop anchor at three and occupy the crease.

its simple take bowlers that can get some bounce with pace and a good spinner ? woods and archer are nailed on if fit also stokes can also bend his back and let them have some chin music, that leaves woakes broad anderson

first test of the ashes 2021/22

Rory Burns
Dom Sibley
Joe Root
Ollie Pope
Ben Stokes
Jos Buttler
Dominic Bess
Jofra Archer
Stuart Broad
Mark Wood
James Anderson

i can see nobody else making a stance and claiming a starting place other than chris woakes or Jack Leach
