Punk and New Wave thread.

You'd have been in in Canada a couple of years or so if you left in 78 mate. They were on Crass records but unlike Crass they could play a bit. Their jangly guitar sounds remind me of early Smiths stuff and it wouldn't surprise me if Johnny Marr was inspired by punk. I know drummer Mike Joyce was having once been in Dukinfield's finest, The Hoax. I think @Mad Eyed Screamer will most probably know.

Also thinking about The Underground market evoked hazy memories of the punk/goth clothes place Habeas Corpus. I'd almost forgotten about there but a glint in my old grey matter has me there almost like yesterday. Bought quite a bit of punk gear from there.

Blimey, showing my age now, that was 38-40 years ago.

Yeah, I was gone by then. Shortly after I came here My mate sent me the 2nd Buzzcocks album and Give em enough rope came out.
Managed to see them both here in 78 or possibly 79.

Never did see Buzzcocks or Clash. I know I know.

*Hangs head in shame: ( ... Saw most of the other Big bands though, Pistols apart being a bit too young.

Did you visit this place mate. You may have said in previous threads but I've forgotten if you have.

Sure did. Most of my singles are from there. Some from Robinsons and virgin and some from the bargain bin in the basement of, was it Marks and Sparks?

Same here, bought stuff from same places but not M&S. You sure it wasn't downstairs of Lewis's or Debenhams? I can't recall them being and I know Woolies didn't have a downstairs record section.

Across from Lewis's. I was thinking Debenhams but my memory is foggy. Not the one on the corner that had a fire (woolies)? Where was Marks?

Debenhams was opposite to Lewis's, Woolies was on Oldham st facing Piccadilly gardens (if you remember)

I think M&S was on Cross st not far from Virgin records. My memory is getting foggy too though.

Debenhams then for sure. They had a load of crap records in a bin with the middle piece missing. We used to always find something worth having for peanuts. I am the fly by Wire is one that I remember and still have.

I’ve not really read this thread, but has the film CBGB been mentioned yet?

City fan Alan Rickman plays Hilly Crystal and the film portrays the birth of punk/indie.

Also Mark Radcliffe did a good BBC documentary called Music For Misfits: The Story of Indie, a few years ago. This shows the rise of the genre in Britain, starting with the Punk movement.

Pretty good film (CBGB). Thanks to Hilly for giving the Dead Boys somewhere to shine.

Not sure if either of you remember it but there used to be a little department store Called 'Hitchins/Hitchens' somewhere around Debenhams and Woolies, could it be that ?

Rather than dump this in the 'what are you listening to now' thread I thought I'd dump it in here.

40 years ago I bought this 7" EP from the underground market paying just 75p for it! Seems like yesterday and it still sounds great, especially the title track.

One - Two - Three - Go
I've got an ego
It won't let me go
What am I gonna do?
A - B - C - D
Paranoia's killing me
I'm dying on my aching feet
What a way to go
Roll up - Roll up
People always stroll up
Say "Why don't you grow up?"
No thank you!
Big cats, small cats
Some cats are fat cats
Those cats are bad cats
What we gonna do?
There's an awful lot of people in the world today
There's an awful lot of trouble in the streets these days
And it doesn't seem to matter what you do or say
If a change is gonna come you've got to help it on it's way
A change is gonna come before too long I know
Peace has gotta come, well, I could be wrong I know
But I just don't know what I can do
You don't trust me and I don't trust you
I bet you wish you did and I know I do

would of done exactly the same myself, love zounds, pretty much had all their vinyl output
every saturday would spend many a time in underground records, happy days

Could be but I don't remember Hitchens in town. They had a store on Stamford st Ashton I remember, but don't recall them selling vinyl or even tapes. Woolies was good for ex chart bargain bucket stuff, especially punk n' new wave as most of it never had much impact on mainstream chart positions and was sold off really cheap.

Think Hitchens was in Piccadilly roughly near where Wetherspoons is.

Happy days indeed pal. Was quite expensive for me buying vinyl, gig tickets going city home/aways, plus time and money going fishing etc. Was always skint but happy.

Managed to see Zounds at least once, possibly twice. Good band back in the day.
