Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

That’s me done for a while, don’t want to even see a City badge or a football for a long time.

I couldn’t be any more furious and dejected, I was happier than this after that goal disallowed against Spurs last season.

That team and manager don’t even deserve a comment.

Have a nice rest of the Summer everyone, see you on here at some time in the future!

So who is culpable:
  1. pep for playing three at the back and three defensive midfielders
  2. the referee for their second goal
  3. a small number of city players who save their worst performance of the season for the most important games
  4. Pep for leaving Bernardo and Phil on the bench
  5. UEFA

Yes the team selection but fucking VAR again. I’d say two of their goals Would have been chalked off had it been us that scored Them and the Lack of replays and ‘proof’ afterwards just supports it.

Bayern, UEFA and Der Spiegel Couldn’t beat us in the courts but when they hold the cards and make up the rules they fucked us over.

we will never be in their club. They can fuck off.

Numerous things so wrong tonight.

1st and foremost - the original team selection. Playing a midfield 3 of Gundogan and Rodri and Ferna - we are one of the most creative sides in world football normally and Pep has a brain fart and decides to reomve all of it. 2 of them 3 together is bad enough but all 3 is shocking and it showed with zero attempts on target in the first half - we created nothing unsuprisingly. Pep is obsessed with Gundogan and its his blindspot - paired with enough legs drive and creatvity we can have gundogan in there as the water carrier but anything else and we lose so much and especially against decent teams..

The set up also nullified Kev - i can understand wanting him closer to goal but he had no supply due to the 3 midfieders beihind him....when we changed it its no surpise that he started to have an influence.

2. Not having a natural goalscorer- sterlings miss is unexplainable and its somethign he used to do but stopped and the last 2 years of so he has been deadly - but he simply should score. Jesus as well had at least 2 chances and needs to do better....the argument about Jesus being a good enough finisher has been going on so long now that it should show that we need more than him.....not saying get rid of him but he needs to be playing as part of a 3 with someone who is a natural finsiher (Kun or someone like him)

3. Defenders who cant defend - from garcia's pitiful tackle for their first to Walker playing people onside and Laporte going walkabout for the second plus Ederson inexplicably gifting them a third we need better in a couple of positions. Garcia defedned the first like he was already playing for Barcalona last night!

The second half was more like it until the shit defending and Jesus and sterlings misses happened.

Aouar looks like the imdfielder i hoped Gundogan was but isnt.

Sterling will be having sleepless nights about that miss

Not good enough. Long way to go to reach the top elite clubs. Never change a winning team And formation. 4-3-3. Its just accept it. They need to find real good players in the future. In a way, Leipzig, Lyon Get through, not all about money. Bayern will WIN the CL.

I knew from the moment that I saw the line up tonight we were going to be troubled.

Unecessary tinkering yet again from Pep. He seriously needs to adapt how we play next season - our high line makes for tragic viewing at times and Lyon looked like they could get in behind us with every ball over the top. We can sign whatever £60m defenders he wants, it's not going to change until he changes how we play.

Yes, some of the players let him down, but Pep's stuborness this season has really been baffling at times.

Why a player who actively told us he doesn't want to be here starts is beyond me.

Why he only made two subs, one on the 84th minute, when it was clear as day we needed to make changes is beyond me.

Why Foden and Bernardo, the two players who bring the vital energy and industry into this side didn't start is beyond me.

This slow midfield 2 of Gundogan and Rodri needs to stop. It works sometimes, but overall, it's horrible. Gundogan isn't a bad player and yes he can be a scape goat at times, but he's a symptom of everything that's been wrong with this side this year and needs to be moved on in order to inject some energy and assertiveness into this side.

Another champions league knockout game, another out of nowhere tactic we are clearly not used to playing and another early elimination to a side we should be beating in second gear. He just doesn’t learn does he?

You can bemoan the Laporte foul not being given, the jaw dropping sterling miss or the Ederson fumble as much as we like but this is entirely on Pep. We spent 55 minutes of a champions league quarter final playing in an unfamiliar formation doing absolutely nothing. the players just did what Pep asked, it’s just what he asked for was shite. We gave ourselves 35 minutes and a goal disadvantage to win and it wasn’t enough. If we had played our normal game from the start I’m certain we stroll that even if all those things still happen towards the end. it was ours for the taking this year all we had to do was turn up and play our normal game to a high standard and we beat them. Credit to Lyon not taking anything from them but they wasn’t even that good, they played like a mid table French team, we simply beat ourselves yet again.

I don’t fear coming up against any other side or player pre match in these games, i fear Pep having a crazy idea and beating ourselves. Why isn’t there somebody within his staff that can pull him aside and tell him not to overthink and change things in these big games? It’s going to keep happening.

Terrible performance, Munich would have destroyed us , pep got this so wrong.
