Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

Disgraceful but unsurprising to me.

I feel sick, but I also know going into this game the result we saw was what I was worried most about.

Why do we keep conceding comic level goals off the counter?

Why do class attacking players suddenly make, strange, poor decisions or miss the most clear cut chances?

It stems from the lack of trust, IMHO, players have in the defence that Pep models with his constant tinkering to prevent this exact problem.

Pep is trying to deal with the fact that our defenders are absolutely awful and it affects the entire team on the pitch.

Liverpool can play how they want because they have faith in their defence.

You remember before Van Dijk and Allison how poor they were in that regard?

Laporte has now had his 2 worst games in big CL games, however, his partner is never the same or his been injured. Ederson was terrible as well today.

Pep plays different lineups and formations that must confuse and make it challenging for players, especially defenders.

HOWEVER, again, that is because he has good reason to not trust most defenders to come out consistently at all.

Some players we have bought have failed us, and we failed finding a CB last summer after Kompany left.

Garcia COULD have had more time earlier, but no way Pep would drop Stones and Nico that fast after what they had done.

Problem was NEITHER of them got back to form and we then switched Fernandinho to CB after Laporte went out.

That's the story.

Is Kouliabaly the answer? Our Van Dyke?

Laporte was to be that, but we need another, clearly, as since Dinho nor Gundo is Dinho at the no. 6 that also increased the deficiencies.

Ake will help as well.

I never felt we'd win it this season because of this weakness that infected the rest of our play against good counter attacking sides.

Next year will be a better chance.

For the first time ever I'm pissed off with Pep.
With that line up I'm pretty sure he had one eye on the Munich game, why he has to over think things I'll never know.
Just get the fcuking job done then worry about the next game.
There's no other reason I can think of that made us line up so defensively against a team like Lyon.

And not to make major changes when we needed goals was criminal.

Cowardly and stupid team selection, subs made to late and brought on the wrong players. Foden should have been on for Fern b4 HT, and Bernado should have been on for one of Rodri, Gundogan at HT.

Seriously fucking furious with that, Pep out thinks himself yet again in the CL against bang average opponents.

Bayern will beat Lyon easy, they won't change their formation.

No doubt tomorrow, the ref or the VAR official will come out and apologise for not giving the foul on Laporte in the build-up to their second goal.

Pivotal moment in our club's history this.

We've spent 10 years building everything towards winning on the world's biggest stage. Hiring Soriano, and Txiki and finally Pep, and still it's not worked.

But worse, we are not progressing. If it was like first we got knocked out in group stages and then got to the knockouts and then quarters and semis and finals? Well that might be ok.

But we aren't. Who can say we are more likely to win it next season? More than likely we'll be out in the first knock out stage again. Square root of fuck all chance of getting to the final let alone winning it.

I'm sorry but Pep is a busted flush now. He's consistently demonstrated he's a genius manager who can do incredible things, but at the same time does not have what it takes to out-smart his opponents in key knockout games. He cannot do it anymore.

I very much doubt we'll offer him a contract extension.

Every year in the CL, we screw up. We'll never win it. Now, you can argue about UEFA not allowing us to win it. Which may have some merit to it. But we have a mental block towards that competition. We shouldn't be losing that game tonight. And we shouldn't have been losing to the likes of Spurs (VAR or no VAR) a couple of seasons back.

Some of you need to calm down and sign off.

It's okay to be upset with the tactics tonight - I think Pep got them wrong too. It's a valid criticism, and it's a worrying trend that he seems to out think himself once we hit the knockout stages. I'm not debating that at all.

But to suggest Pep should be fired, or insinuate we'd be better off without him so is so fucking insane and childish I don't even know where to begin.

Pep is one of the best - if not the best - managers in the world. We have a fantastic squad, infrastructure, and owners willing to invest to keep it that way. We are so incredibly lucky.

Mistakes were made, and we were outplayed. It's frustrating but it happens. Let's see how that is addressed in the coming weeks. On to next season.

He shouldn’t be sacked but he needs to learn

we have a much better team than Lyon but the best bite were sat on the bench

even when we went down to 2 and 3 1 he didn’t change it bring on foden Bernardo what have we got to lose .

mancini never gave up against qpr . Pep gave up tonight and he was shite
