Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

One thing that seriously fucks me off with Pep,and has for a long time.

Is his inability to revert to whats best when something is obviously not working.

It is like his ego gets in the way of common sense.

We wasted 1 hour tonight.

We can not defend for Toffee.

Yet we decide not to play to our strengths.

Why ffs.

Embarrassing. Even worse than that Arsenal semi-final in the FA Cup. Tactical shocker. Pep has been well and truly rumbled this season. Is there a team in any league that are so inept at corner kicks.

No way second goal should stand. Ref should have gone to a monitor to look at the foul he was about to blow for.

This one is on Pep. Not playing Foden was unforgiveable amongst other strange choices. He’s fucked this one just like the Tottenham first leg last year. He’s been brilliant for us but this is really hard to stomach. Just poor management tonight.

All the best teams have a formidable defence and many win by the odd goal but don’t concede- look at our season it is pretty obvious along with the missed chances -) scored loads this season but missed a good few too - let in some shite goals just inadequate

Very sad not to see us playing in an epic semi final next week.

Their second goal never should have stood. I hate VAR so much, not even for us but the delay in announcing their first goal too.. just spoils the spontaneity.

However... in the end we did it to ourselves. Bizarre formation in the first half, sterling miss, ederson mistake.

I love Pep tho and 100% stand by him staying for many more years. He’s brought a quality of football to this club I’ve never seen before in my life. Be careful what you wish for sacking him.

We have a very ageing squad. With the buys that we've made lately (Rodri, Cancello etc) I have no confidence in the club to get the right players in this summer.

Talk of 80m for a 29 year old Mangala impersonator.

Very reactionary but I’m pissed off and need to rant...

1. Pep got it wrong by showing them too much respect. They clearly posed a threat on the counter as they showed later on but it was evident that we weren’t creating chances in the first half. We played a high line which got caught out for their first goal so it clearly didn’t make a difference anyway.

2. Yet again we missed our chances when we were level. We didn’t create as many as we usually do but we could have put this game to bed after our equaliser. We miss an unreal amount of chances and need a player who can finish them. We aren’t clinical enough.Watch Bayern go and batter Lyon on Wednesday and show us what difference it makes when you take your chances.

3. Officials screwed us over once again. Lots of soft decisions went Lyon’s way and there was a foul on Laporte in the build up to their second goal. How VAR doesn’t overturn that I don’t know. It’s frustrating but why give them the chance to screw us over? This was the most winnable of all the quarter finals we have ever had in this competition and we let it (partly) boil down to a poor refereeing decision.

4. How the fuck does Sterling miss that? How? HOW? How does a professional football player miss a chance like that? The best players deliver in the big games and in moments like that. Not good enough ffs. That’s where teams like Barca, Real, Bayern etc would have scored. I hate them but there’s no way any of the dippers miss that either ffs.

5. It was Lyon for fuck’s sake. Seventh in a far inferior league and they haven’t played competitive football in half a year. We don’t deserve to win this competition if we lose to teams like that. I would much rather have got battered by Bayern. We’ve played them three times in two years under Pep and haven’t beat them once. Ridiculous.

All in all a disappointing end to a disappointing season (yes, I was hoping for more than the league cup, a distant second place and a CL QF and if you weren’t then let’s agree to disagree). The fact that we haven’t made it past the quarter finals in the CL the past three years is incredibly frustrating and in my opinion a failure on Pep’s part. Yes, we have achieved some amazing things and have won a lot of trophies along the way but we have failed in Europe.

I’d be livid if we had a goal taken off for that foul on Laporte. Not holding var responsible there.
Tactics at fault here.
Wouldn’t change Pep for anyone else though.

Say what you want about how shit we were in that first half and how wasteful we were in the second half but we were the team looking more likely to score a second until that corrupt VAR call. It would be nice if our players didn't let these things affect them but they always do.

The scorer tripped up the defender who would have been covering that side, accidental or not it's a foul. Definitely a wrong VAR call, even Peter Walton didn't side with the VAR call.

I heard his take on the offside but I don't agree with the reasoning, that he wasn't affecting play. How is a player not affecting play if he dummies the ball and lets it go through his legs? The whole defence stopped because of his actions. Didn't affect the play my arse.

Every season in the CL, without fail,we get calls like this. People will claim one call shouldn't matter because we should be good enough to over come it but that's as naive as it gets. Of course these moments matter, they swing the momentum and decide games in the knockout stages. The only thing I would agree with, is it does make you question if the will power of our players is up there with the best teams. I'd love us to have a decision like that and instead go out an smash the other team in defiance but I don't see it happening.

As for the rest of the game, Pep got the team selection wrong, I said we were looking slow, we let their attack get warmed up in the first 10 mins pretty much.

I think people are giving Lyon too much credit, this was just the Arsenal game 2.0. We poor in that first half, and we've been crap at turning games around when we go behind this season. Lyon didn't really create alot of chances, the second goal shouldn't have been allowed and the 3rd goal was just a gift from Eddie, that Sterling seemed to knock the stuffing out of us.

Maybe it's better we didn't embarrass ourselves against Bayern in the end, our defending is atrocious at times.

Spot on. He can see the game is not working, so change the fkng tactics. This is just common sense.

Roll on next season.

Bitterly disappointed after not just the result but especially the way we played.

After kev equalized I was hoping we could go on and win the game.

In all honesty though regardless of the lyon players theatrics we were 2nd best for the majority of the game.

The formation and tactics obviously didn't help the situation but surely to God professional players should be able to play various formation and roles and would have worked on this in the days leading up to the match

Lyons 2nd goal summed up our night. Raz misses a sitter from 3 yards, they go up the other end and capitalise on our lack of concentration and awareness.

It's football it happens but mentally and physically the players looked like they were already on holiday.
