Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

We started a knockout Champions League game with Mahrez,Bernado,Foden on the bench.

I am still in disbelief.

Going for the Slug and Tortoise partnership which has served us so well..........................

The Walker one would have been very soft but I agree if they wanted to shaft us that would have been given.

With corners too. He was very accurate though wasn't he? He hammered it hard on target every time so maybe that's why he kept trying. The keeper saved them fairly comfortably though. It makes you realise how good elite players are. A lower league keeper could probably concede every time? A lower league mid fielder would not hit the target with all those crosses.
 
our problem is we played poorly, our system was bad. We could have used b. silva in the mid today, our mistake was the starting line up, but it was to easy for them. One or two passes and they were through. The better team one simple as that.

But it’s Peps fault we spent 55 minutes playing in a formation the players aren’t used to and were very visibly struggling with. He handicapped us severely tonight, got it badly badly wrong, took far too long to change it back and didn’t change it enough when he did and then asked his players to dig him out of the hole he’s dug himself. Those glaring chances go in, we win and I guarantee we're all sat here smugly saying "Pep masterclass".

We had enough chances to win the game. The players didn't take them. That cannot be the manager's fault.

I posted when we went through against Madrid that Lyon have the perfect set-up to take us to the cleaners and they did just that tonight. Disgusting VAR decision but you know that's coming, what is it now 4-5 years on the trot.

No I think it was a good decision. Laporte who was poor all night ran accross and tripped over the attackers leg. The conspiracy theorists will no doubt make hay in the days ahead but yet again it was schoolyard defending and poor finishing that done us in yet again. Will Pep get another chance to get eliminated at the QF stage maybe not.
 
Again, I've been told I just want "shiny new toys" since the start of this season I've complained about the balance of the squad. "Look what we achieved last season".

Mendy hopefully next season hes back to it.
Gundogan doesn't suit our play, not a cdm.
Mahrez slows us down, brief glimpses of brilliance but goes missing way too much.

Add to that David, ferna and kun either leaving or 1 season left.

Today was crazy, trying 352/361 in a 1 leg knockout game when not used to it. Leon have a mobile, youthful midfield and we play garcia, ferna, rodri, gundogan and shunt kev out on the wing.

We need 2 solid transfer windows and re balance this squad and develop a plan b.
 
The French TV are battering Pep and rightly deserved. He left 4 great attacking players on the bench for fear of an inferior team.
 
The squad isnt as good as people think. .

Its ageing and too slow.

I dont think 5 players will bridge the gap to win the champs league.

Especially with the playeds we're apparently linked to.

Shouldn’t have come to that though should it? We shouldn’t be relying on 50/50 refereeing decisions to save us. The touch on Laporte was so slight that it wasn’t clear and obvious so I can’t blame VAR for that.
The only person to blame for this result is Pep.
Even if it was disallowed we still lost 2-1.
 
Our strength is our attack 102 goals in the premier. So why drop our attacking players against a team 7th in the french league ? I know I keep repeating myself but I just dont get it. Just bloody attack why 3 defensive midfielders ....time for bed if i can sleep so angry with that team selection today
