Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

I do wonder if pep had half an eye on the Munich game with that initial set up.
It's a good point. It almost felt he was trying to save people for the Bayern match. When you look at our slow defensive players tonight: Gundo, Rhodri, Garcia, Ferdy... we had a slim chance with that set-up. The only silver lining from tonight is that we avoided total humiliation in the semi-final. Bayern would have killed us and so would PSG.

If that was Peps interview for his return to his beloved Barca then he's got the gig, coz we were equally as shit as they were last night.
Why the fuck start Garcia who wants out, and leave players like foden n Bernie who would give sweat n blood for the shirt on the bench.
Why tinker again n again with a system where not one player had a fucking clue what they were supposed to do.
I want a keeper who actually makes a save and doesn't turn to shit in every big match.
We need pace n energy and Pep gave us slow predictable shite again, fucked off massively with that shambles, fucking horrendous team selection n tactics tonight, Pep you failed us tonight too much tinkering coz you wanna look like a smartarse.

We can complain until we are blue in the face about there 2nd goal , but we do it every season , we should be out of sight against teams like Lyon and Spuds , but we fuck out tactics up , miss sitters , penalties and then we moan about UEFA and the refs . We have the ability to be two or three goals clear in most games we play and the fact we give UEFA the chance to fuck us over every time is the most frustrating thing , because as far as the Champs league goes we have a self destruct button.

Just us that have to perfect every game to win it then, yeah?

And we drag the players down before a ball is kicked.

I’d agree. Expected Goals had us as 3-1 winners - we certainly created the opportunities.

It does matter because it was 1-1 when that happened, with 10/15 minutes left, that makes a huge difference.

I do however agree with the team selection being the ultimate contributing factor, a lack of pace and width has cost us all season and it was the same again tonight. The back 3 and wingbacks formation was ideal, the implementation with an inverted wingback (Cancelo) and the last attack minded wingback in world football (Walker) just doesn't make sense.
Yawn. Doesnt matter. Why the fuck did we play Rhodri Fern and Gundogen in the same side at the same time

Pep fucked up, shit Negative selection
Garcia wants out yet plays ahead of Stones and Otamendi
Fernandinho showing his age
How the hell did Foden not get on after his performance against Madrid is beyond me
Foden’s easy to drop because he accepts everything without complaining. He only got a run in the team due to the league having long since gone.

21 years ago....we got beat by Stockport fucking County at home.....I think that was the lowest feeling I have ever experienced as a City fan.....wasn't at York away....so I will take this loss on the chin(still angry though), and trust in Pep to deliver us the Holy Grail. (we've gotta beat all teams 4-0 or we will be fucked over by UEFA though, as per Lyon's 2nd goal).
I am still simmering though......why, why, why ?

This is concerning

Better be careful Kaz will be calling KDB A dipper. :-)

And i 100% agree with him.

Rinse + Repeat.

Pep lost that.

Only he knows why he changed the tactics.

Only he knows why we finish that game losing 3-1 with game changing players on the bench.

Another champions league knockout game, another out of nowhere tactic we are clearly not used to playing and another early elimination to a side we should be beating in second gear. He just doesn’t learn does he?

You can bemoan the Laporte foul not being given, the jaw dropping sterling miss or the Ederson fumble as much as we like but this is entirely on Pep. We spent 55 minutes of a champions league quarter final playing in an unfamiliar formation doing absolutely nothing. the players just did what Pep asked, it’s just what he asked for was shite. We gave ourselves 35 minutes and a goal disadvantage to win and it wasn’t enough. If we had played our normal game from the start I’m certain we stroll that even if all those things still happen towards the end. it was ours for the taking this year all we had to do was turn up and play our normal game to a high standard and we beat them. Credit to Lyon not taking anything from them but they wasn’t even that good, they played like a mid table French team, we simply beat ourselves yet again.

I don’t fear coming up against any other side or player pre match in these games, i fear Pep having a crazy idea and beating ourselves. Why isn’t there somebody within his staff that can pull him aside and tell him not to overthink and change things in these big games? It’s going to keep happening.
Agree with your sentiment. Lyon are not strong at the back, so they have to play low and use speedy attackers plus great passing midfielders, a bit like Wolves. Houssem Aouar absolutely bossed us today, great player. So the risk was always there regardless of the setup. But, if we played our normal game, chances are they would be dismantled by our attacking prowess, regardless of their threats. All of our losses in recent seasons have been extremely unlucky btw, surely luck will turn one year.

I know they’ve had some churn of players since, but they weren’t weaker than us last time.
It dismayed me a bit before the game, BT bigging us up as overwhelming favourites to win this game. Not in my mind we weren't; I always thought it would be a close thing, esp after they dispatched the Italian champions.
In that case we never had any chance whatsoever of winning the CL. If we cannot safely despatch a team as ordinary as Lyon we might as well all pack up and give up.

As sick as I've ever felt. Pep explained his decision not to have a two on two situation with our CBs and went with a midfield shield. The Mendy we signed is not the Mendy we have now - the injury has robbed him of the athleticism he once had. We need a proper LB and a right-sided CB of world class standard. Cancelo isn't a bad player, but he does not strike fear into opposing teams and neither does he strike the ball crisply. Raheem will need some picking up after that. My fear was always that we'd have some inexplicable missed chance when it mattered. Just wish we'd got the bad luck out of the way domestically.

Peps gonna have to beat himself in his own head before he ever wins another CL.

Going against the grain here so tin hat on.

I didn't like the line up either btw but..

xG on that game was 3-1 to City and we would have all been happy with that score. Appalling misses and gifted goals are not Pep's fault.

Not saying he couldn't have picked a team that won 5-0 but this, on the face of it, Is the players.
