Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

It's very bizarre really is pep pragmatic away in the CL? No he plays the game according to his beliefs. Then we play the French equivalent to West ham and he goes for the slowest midfield in history.

A bad decision. Laughable defending. Shit keeping and we are out again. I started a thread about pep being at the end of his cycle and got pelters.

Best shush because it's here. Whatever tools you give this guy in Europe he is a failure.

agree he got this badly wrong and he is floored with his own legacy of being a master tactician and screws up just for the sake of it but he has still given us some of the greatest moments as city fans and football ive personally never seen before.

Far to slow, we have two players with genuine pace and one of them is a right back. We play far to high with the pace we have. Not replacing Sane was a huge mistake.

A poor shot stopper in net. 95% of "one on ones" go in.

Thankfully we didn't have to face Bayern as they'd have had a field day with this defence.

Starting to worry why Pep can't see the lack of pace is a major factor with the way we play and the way we get beat!

Great with the ball, terrible without it.

Ask yourself which of our defensive players suit our high line tactics? one, Kyle. The rest are great players, but are to slow when we lose the ball. If we face one or two speed merchants we are in for a tough game.

My fears are we have been found out.
Pep did more than just not replace Sane.
His behavior towards Sane and treatment of him was a written invitation for Bayern to tap him up.

Just got up and watched the game here in Australia.
Absolutely gobsmacked at the team selection.. I had a feeling as soon as I saw the team we would lose.
3 defensive midfielders and Walker on the right wing.
Absolutely inexplicable team selection for the biggest game of the season.
When you look at the attacking talent on our bench.
I'm actually speechless.

bang on - and this is not a hindsight reaction, frustrating as we could of blown these off the park with more energy in that midfield - love the guy but he tries too hard to reinvent the wheel at times

That's very Raggish , did you know 80 odd of the clubs in the four divisions win f*ck all every year, you can bet your bottom dollar if the Rags or Villa had won the Carabao Cup it would be massive , maybe we have been spoilt.
We are one of the biggest clubs in the world, we are not the Manchester City of the 80s and 90s.
Our owners have invested hundreds of millions into the club, they demand success and multiple trophies.
We have finished second in the title and a massive 16 points behind the winners, totally unacceptable for the club.
We have just lost against a reasonable but far inferior French team in the quarterFinals of the Champions League , again unacceptable.
I would think this morning our owner and Chairman are not happy people and want some serious answers from the people running the football side of the club.

The team was set up to play cautious with no balls, bite or courage. That starts from the manager. All these CL QF losses are due to his weird cautious set up.

Were there individual errors involved? Yes. Missed chances? Yes. But the biggest issue was our mindset.

Can someone please tell me why Bernardo was on the bench today? He wasn't injure right? WHY Pep left him starving on the bench?

We actually finished a massive 18 points behind in the Premier League, an outcome that in the end I was grateful for because it meant we retained the record of winning by 19 points. Maybe for City there's a curse on the European Cup (as it originally was) going right back to 1968, he said gloomily...

Agreed, a player whom has underperformed by his standards this season but a perfect time to bring him into the team, especially a game in his home country and an occasion which he showed in his pre match interview meant so much to him.

We missed Aguero so much, top players will always make the difference in games like this.

That's absolutely right. Does anyone else think that the thuggery in the English game, resulting in such as Aguero's injury, is one of the reasons why English teams have not done better in European competitions ie. because they lose key players to injury to an extent that their rivals do not?

Unforgivable in so many ways. Poor performance by the manager, Sterling always chokes on the big occasion, dreadful defending again etc. We are a shadow of the side that won the league and as we lose key players and are unable to replace them due to ffp, we are heading in the wrong direction. The establishment were intent on stopping us and despite the CAS ruling, they have. I’ve been a ST holder since 1970, but I’m actually glad fans aren’t allowed back into grounds this year, because I haven’t missed it and I have the distinct feeling that I’ve already been to the top of the mountain. I’m thankful for what I’ve witnessed during the last 10 years after decades of garbage, but this has an air of the ‘end of the party’ about it.
Oh give over - as the great man said, you cannot be serious.

pep tried to be too cute, messing lyon's gameplan by giving them the ball and try to counter through the flanks and three center backs so one would cover the others mistakes. also, with wingbacks against its harder for a 3-5-2 to escape the pressing through the flanks. why do it against a bang average side like lyon i dont know, specially when your team is not used to play that way. it was a massive embarassment, its more than time for pep to stop tinkering in european ties, impose your game, make small adjustments only and believe on your players

Champion league maybe, but have you seen the amount of cups we've picked up over the last 3 years?

I expect better from you.
Nah. I think he is just a shit cup coach. We win coz we are so far superior to the opposition that when he tinkers it's not enough to matter. Even in cups he is tinkering.

It just so happens we don't have the excessive talent advantage in CL.

He is a better year long coach. Has great philosophies and when his players are well drilled. They win more than they lose in the long haul.

But when it comes to cup games. He is awful. Even in the cups we won. We often started our shot due to some dumb new idea he put out and had to wrestle back to victory.

To me, this is the end of my love-in with Pep. Gundog always starts, 2 substitutions when we're up against it, criminally leaves Foden on the bench, when he will be one of the best young players in the country, but he can't get a game.

A blind man and his dog would have known that we need a Striker and a couple of good defender, last 2 transfer windows he's signed no-one. Jesus is just not that good a striker.

Rodri and Cancelo are sh*te, Gundog is useless, Mahrez turns up once every 6 games and does nothing the other 5. What did he do tonight when he came on? Jack sh*t as usual.

Thanks for the great 2 years winning the League Pep, but we have a squad that in a year or two without KDB and Foden we will be lucky to scrape mid-table. The players look tired of the tactics used and constantly overthinking caused us to lose so many games this season.

Can we get Poch? It's time for a change
Mahrez helped to set up the equaliser. We have signed Ake, and a winger who from all accounts is a great replacement for Sane. Get over your emotional funk (mid-table, for God's sake?) and try taking a look at some facts.

Going to tell you why I *gag* respect the scouse cunts. They have a heartbreaking CL final loss, they come back and win the whole thing. They have a heartbreaking PL loss, they come back and win the whole thing.. I respect that. We have meekly bowed out of the CL every fucking year we have qualified, it's almost pitiful.

I will say I'm glad we won that CAS appeal though, can't wait to meekly bow out next season. It would have been a shit season if we couldn't meekly bow out of the CL.
Oh rubbish, there was nothing meek about the way we lost to Spurs last season - were you there? Utte tripe.

To get it right: this comment is in my humble view UTTER tripe. So many crybabies on this forum tonight.

LOL "the thuggery in the English game" you clearly never watched football in the 60s 70s and 80s

Exactly. I am a huge Pep Guardiola fan but If we want to win the CL he is not the guy. The thing that terrifies me is that nothing's gonna change next season vis-a-vis CL. We will be playing breathtaking football at times and would probably win the league. But the CL nah!
If he is brought to win the PL well that's a club hierarchy decision but CL is essential for football dominance. But the insistent of Kaldoon and Txiki has always been CL despite of what our fans say so clearly there is zero progress there..

And this isn't 90s or 80's anymore. This inferiority complex needs to go. We don't get to say ,remember when we were in league 1 when billion dollars have been pumped into this club. Billion fucking dollars. This bonhomie between DoF and the coach needs to stop and we need to get more ruthless in our decisions and also in transfer market.

I am not an expert so I wouldn't mind Pep leaving or signing a 5 year extension but today was a big clusterfuck that needs changing immediately.
