Folks, this is going to turn into an unbearable saga. There is only one option for city to purchase Messi. They most convince Barcelona to sit and negotiate a transfer under 100 million euro. City cannot under any circumstances pay more than that amount and this has been filtered to the Spanish press who are very close to Soriano, Pep and Bereguistain.

It’s becoming more and more clear that Messi was terribly guided by his close circle and attorneys and they are now arriving at a bad juncture.

If indeed Messi is a free man why hasn’t he been signed ?

If he is free to leave why are city researching and filtering potential offers. The last info that was leaked to a member of the press in Spain of the most popular soccer show in Spain, indicates that city under no circumstances can go over 100 because of the FIFA fair play concerns and they are looking to offer players included in that 100. In particular Eric would be a player that Barcelona has shown serious interest for.

Now if Messi decides that he feels confident in the fact that he is in the right, he would always be able to get a provisional transfer by FIFA but the matter would lead a resolution by the courts and that could ultimately leas to City having to pay 700 million euros. There is absolutely ZERO chances that city will take that chance if Messi’s father this coming Wednesday does not reach a deal with Barcelonas president.

Barcelona’s president and club and at this juncture are not willing to let him leave for 100 under any circumstances.

Messi’s dad is in Rosario and he will arrive and meet with Barcelona on Wednesday or the latest thursday. This is a key date in terms of seeing how serious Barcelona is about their stance. Mind you Barcelona are in dire need of money to balance their sheet in order for the current president and him executives not to be financially responsible with their own assets for the losses, because these assets were used as collateral to obtain loans.

Messi made a clumsy mistake of challenging the club in the hopes that the president would fold with the social pressure and because he only has a couple of months of his tenure left, Barcelona’s president who is worn with Messi constant threats throughout the year has said, not this time pal.

Messi right now is not in a good spot and it’s starting to show by the hour. He’s very very close to signing with city; but it’s all a smoke screen until Barcelona caves in.

Im going for an IP address showing this has been posted from Essex.

Because both Barça and La Liga have to do paperwork to facilitate the deal regardless of if he’s registered with them now or not. Both are refusing to accept it and both saying they’ll not do the relevant forms.
If hes asked to leave, then surely they need to sort the paperwork....
If they drag it out, maybe he can do them for loss of earnings?

I’d add Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos in there, maybe the tier below with Iniesta, Edgar David’s type players. But there’s been some amazing footballers through the years who you could class as the top draw. It’s all about personal opinion. Van Baston another for example.

Oh come on, no one ever says Roberto Carlos is the greatest player of all time...

I'm not talking about players who can say they are up there in the top 10 or 15, I mean how many could claim to be the #1 without people thinking its a ridiculous claim.

Because Barça and La Liga still both need to do paperwork and release him,he can’t just rock up at City. That’s why! It’s fairly simple and this is in Messi’s hands now, he’s played a blinder. Add some leaks today saying he’ll not be accepting a wage as he’s not a Barça player and it’s game over in reality.

How many clubs can say that they had player who could legitimately claim to be the greatest of all time play for them?

Pele - Santos, NY Cosmos.

Maradonna - Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla, Boca Juniors, Argentinos Juniors.

Cruyff - Ajax, Barcelona, Feyenoord.

Ronaldo - Barca, Real, Inter, PSV, Milan.

Messi - Barca, .....?

The list of clubs who can say they had these players for multiple seasons or when they were the best player in the world and still breaking all sorts of records is even slimmer.

And there's no English clubs on that list. I suppose United fans would champion Cristiano Ronaldo and Best, but I looked up about a dozen lists from all sorts of newspapers and no one ever puts them in the top 3.

It really is uncharted territory for the Premier League and City.

Some top berting there to not include Cristiano :)

Zidane genuinely approaches that bracket for me, but I understand why some may disagree.

Yes they do but both have said no... if Messi sticks to his guns then FIFA can administer the relevant paperwork in the interim while it’s sorted at league level. Remember, the La Liga refused to accept Neymar’s buy out money for a while, they don’t want these big names leaving their league.

Why is this taking so long? Surely an independent lawyer could read through the contract and say yes or no whether the release clause still applies.

If it does, we walk away, not paying £700m for anyone. If not, Barca can't stop us asking Messi to sign a contract with us.

How is it not that simple? Either he still has this clause in his contract or he doesn't. We don't need to be playing these stupid political games with the Barca president or Tebas or anyone else.
I can't say i have ever seen a fast working Lawyer. Barca & Messi are probably arguing over the wording of the contract. If it says Messi can walk away at the end of the 2019/20 season then he's got a good case. If it gives a date then that could be more complicated with the extension of the season.

Why bother spending ages composing all that when a simple "I haven't a clue is going on" would convey the same. Or are you worried we might be getting him?

There’s a 3rd and 4th scenario though.

3rd - His “leave on a free” clause ended on June 10th and so he’s still under contract but (4th) his £700m buy out clause ended at the end of 2019/20 season.

So he’s still under contract but without a buy out clause and so the two clubs must negotiate a deal (as happens with all Uk transfers anyway where buy out clauses don’t exist).

But Barca have to be mindful of option 5 which is that Messi tears up his contract and invoked the Webster ruling for a value close to his remaining wages (£50m ish) which Barca won’t want.

I think he ends up signing for a fee bigger than Webster but less than Barca want. Circa £60-75m.

Even if the €700m release clause doesn’t apply, it doesn’t necessarily mean he can go for free. You are over-simplifying, mate.

Yep, and the list is even smaller when you only include clubs the player played for while still considered best in the world. We're on the brink of something truly special.

I can understand why people are saying Ronaldinho and Zidane (not Roberto Carlos though), but your point still stands.
