Boro v City 40 years ago today.

It was almost certainly this match :

It wasn't home fans fighting each other, a couple of coachloads of City fans went in the home end and when Asa scored after about 25 minutes it all kicked off and the City fans ended up being escorted to the away terracing in the corner. I was told that one of the pubs in Wythenshawe had organised the coaches, not sure how true that was - I went up on the special from Victoria, there were probably a few hundred on that.
Yes, you are right, it was about that time.
We were in the end opposite, not in a corner. and it was not rammed with City fans. The "go off" was right in the middle top of the home end, must have been well planned Xmas fun.

Yes, it was all-seated behind that goal and to the left was a corner terrace that was usually allocated to visiting fans as well.

It was always reported that we took 550-650 and out number even tho it still kick off

It was pretty tasty up there in 74 ? We lost 3-0 & Willie Donachie was sent off.
Fighting all the way through the park and back to the station.
For the return at Maine Road City gave them hell in one of the best organized revenge violence ever.
Boro we're just battered every where. One of their coaches was set on fire,a minibus overturned & cars smashed.
So many of them were injured that the Chief Constable of Cleveland complained to his Manchester counterpart that local police didn't offer enough protection and turned Nelson's Eye.
That was the start of the really bad blood that continues to this day.
