Manctopia on BBC2

I’d love to know what sort of wages people are on that they can effectively throw away £1k a month renting, dead money to me, I get it allows you the freedom to move quickly but for your average Joe on average yearly salary that’s outrageous. Interesting the couple from Glasgow and the different options they had a house in Miles Platting or the apartment in Manchester for the same price, I think she thought she was getting the flat she was renting until the reality set in.
the more the Metrolink is extended the wider the city centre and gentrification will come, just look how London has extended. If they are upto Miles Platting next stop Failsworth and then possibly even lower part of Oldham! The southern part of manchester is already up there so the expansion has to go North West and East. I might buy up a cheap bit of land so in 30 years my daughter will be sat on a goldmine.

Back to the subject of the thŕead l am finding this programme very interesting. My dad was brought 'up in the extreme slums of Angel Meadow andwould scrub out my grandfathers lodging house on a Saturday morning and then walk to Maine Road.

There is a very good book about the history of 'the Medder'.l was surprised to see my daughter in law had it. It was a text book for her nursing training because of the thousands of deaths through cholera etc

Now its going to have starter homes for £350 k.

I have an apartment in Castlefield. I try and rent it for £1800 pm. There are plenty of people who earn 100k who are contracting, or in Manchester temporarily, and want a nice place but don't want to buy. One of my first tenants was Lombardo who obviously could afford that amount for a nice place. I am in the same boat as I work abroad, want a nice place to live, but don't want to buy, so pay a small fortune in rent.

Where do you live mate?

Watching it on YouTube now. Great that there's so much investment flowing into the city. But, equally sad that good local people (like that lady in Eccles/Winton) are being "priced out". It's a vastly different city to the place I grew up in, back in the 60s and 70s. I suppose that's what you call "progress". Hmm.

The older I get the more i struggle watching programs like this where the gulf between the have's and have not's widens.

All gets a little too much for me.

I guess I have a lot of empathy with people who are struggling especially when kids are involved.

I do too but the have's deserve their lot in life if they have put in the effort to enrich their lot. I begrudge them nothing.
As for the have not's try living in a country nowhere near as generous as ours. I have seen real hardship on my travels throughout the globe with poor kids in Mumbai living under corregated iron and having to piss and shit from a sewer pipe overhanging a river bed. We dont have such things here and our government looks after it's populace and anyone who says otherwise is deluded.
