Yes - but things have changed. Barca have spent themselves into a massive hole and with covid denting everyones income those debts are starting to look unsustainable. Same issue across many big clubs, they don't have the spending power right now as they don't know what the income will look like for the next 12 months. If Messi was 29 then yes they would fight much harder to keep him but given how old he is and how much they pay him and the other players they have, legal issues around his release clause etc, it all points to selling him and moving on.
