Tour de France 2020

Ineos dictate days like this. They dictate whole tours. Jumbo Visma look like they will do that from now on.

Disappointing to see Carapaz fade today, considering he was brought in to bolster Bernal and be an alternate option having come off a Giro win last year.
Just reinforces the impression we’re looking at a 3 week Jumbo Visma procession.

Ineos performed poorly today and Bernal didn't have the legs.

Early days but Roglic was strong and his team dominated.

Ineos performed reasonably, all things considered.

Sivakov - recovering from injury and trying to ride it off
Amador - same as above
Rowe - there for the flat
Carapaz - disappointing as @chesterbells said. To be fair to him, he was building up to the Giro rather than the Tour
Van Baarle - honestly not sure what happened to him but he would unlikely to have been there in the last 2km. In fact, no need for him on the final climb as he is slightly below Castro and Kwiato level
Castro - he was there until Van Aert peeled off with about 2km to go. Not far off what can be expected. He's not a climber. He's an engine who can climb a bit
Kwiato - same as above, pretty much

Would suggest main difference between LJV and Ineos was Kuss. People have to remember Ineos are in a stage of transition. They are basically missing the best GC rider of this generation and a very good all-rounder and GC winner (Thomas). LJV flit in and out, rather than dominate. They pick their moment. It is hardly as dominant as the SKY train of 2011 onwards. They don't have the strength to replicate that.

Bernal had the legs today. He just didn't have the sprint, as expected. In a climb like that, Roglic will always out sprint him at the end. The Colombian finished on the same time (official) but 3s difference on the clock. On an alpine climb at altitude, I would suggest Roglic would not be able to do that. These kind of climbs favour Roglic. If Bernal outsprinted him today, it would have been a major surprise.

Fuller analysis that, cheers. I didn’t see how things panned out for each rider, so a useful read. I certainly hope you’re right, and things are not as clear cut as I feared.

Visma dominant again with Van Aert taking the stage.

Bennett takes the Green Jersey.

GC unchanged and all safe.

That was a borefest. Expected though.

Yesterday, Van Aert was dropping GC riders on a Cat 1, while today he wins a sprint on an uphill drag. Mathieu van der Poel was seen as the next big thing from cyclo-cross but Van Aert is outshining him this season. Hopefully, MvdP soon moves to a team who gets invited to the TDF. He's too good and entertaining to not be seen on the biggest stage and limit himself primarily to Spring racing.
