Important not to add the fantasy storyline theory which seems to happen a lot on here. It even happened with the CAS case with City and UEFA apparently in it together all along to beat the cartel etc.

At the moment it just is what it is. Messi and City probably do have a deal agreed but getting through Barca is currently the stumbling block. The idea of City/Messi/Barca being in cahoots and playing things out during this part of the process just isn’t realistic.

Barcelona appear to have made their best bid to bridge the gap to the player, and the day ends with Messi on strike. I thought barca might realise that their position was hopeless and they might accede to messi's wishes for a transfer but that hasn't happened yet.

The messi camp might decide to move on a free, and that would make for a quick outcome but if it's a negotiated transfer then that's going to be slow. I thought the threat of a Messi buy-out might lead to a quick barca climb-down but we didn't see that.

If we sign Messi on a free and then Barcelona take it to court and win and the court sets a fee to pay, but that case is resolved/figure is announced after the 20/21 season (ie 21/22 season or later), what year's accounts would the fee City pay be on?
