Skysports have just said he's staying for the year and leaving next summer on a free because of this impass

It is pretty much this simple. No one wants to go to court as you never know the outcome but it is probably the default here. The bottom line will be how much do Barca rate their chance in court v's what they think of any offer that comes in from city. The outcomes in probability order are:

City and Barca agree a deal
Messi and Barca go to court (he is ruled a free agent and signs for city)
Messi and Barca go to court (he is ruled a Barca player and has to stay)
Messi agrees a deal to stay at Barca
Messi gives up and stays on his current deal.
 
Just said on SSN that because of the complications he will stay a year and then leave on a free.

From some Argentinian source 'close' to Messi.
 
Why would he go to this trouble with the get out for free clause and then stay at Barcelona for a season? Makes no sense.
 
Used to like Barcelona too. What a set of petty bastards.

To be fair, I think most of this is the doing of that Bartomeu. He should have been able to leave with a good send off.
