The Times...

Deal or no deal, Britain’s reputation abroad is plummeting‘

There will be a customs border in the Irish Sea that will apply to goods going from GB to NI. Even Arlene Foster (DUP) accepts this will be the case. Even with a deal this will be the case. This border will come into effect on Jan 1st and it is an internal border between two nations of the UK.

It will cause angst and you will hear a lot more than a peep.

This lot are gonna "love" a border....

@BobKowalski who is crying here?
I think that the last few pages have demonstrated that it is only some Remainers that are lip quivering - no Leavers at all

In fact I would go further and say that some Remainers (of course I mean the minority - just the more vocal ones) seem to be going out of their way to confirm what has been suggested about their positions for years - i.e. that winning an argument on an internet forum is indeed more important to them than the strategic best interests of the UK

Now there has been a deal of 'faux angst' from these Remainers about that observation being made - and that was credible years ago when they could argue that Remaining in the EU was indeed what was best for the UK - but that position is no longer credible.

We have indeed left and are in the process of establishing the arrangements for trade and recovery from CV - and the situation is that the UK Government cannot be put in a position where the UK is prevented from investing in UK constituencies.

I suspect that part of the concern for some posters - those that are found on political threads pouring out their hatred of the Tories - is that the commitments to 'levelling up' might actually be progressed and that being free to do that must not be constrained by the bollocks that is referred to as LPF.

Their hatred of the Tories seems all-consuming and the perverse situation could be that they are not wanting the UK Government to spend the next 4 years investing in Midlands and Northern constituencies as it might be received positively in 2024

I think we've given up on NI/Eire now. I'm not sure some people have ever taken a close look at the physical features of the border with NI.It's not as neat as it looks on the bbc weather map, but a very complicated line full of historical compromises I assume. Frequently turning back on itself so three sides of a square field will have the border running along them and sometimes running down the middle of streets. It also sweeps up the west and over much of the north of NI. It's pretty much impossible to enforce as the British Army found to their cost. Watchtowers / checkpoints will be largely inflammatory political gestures unless someone is going to start cratering minor roads and blocking farm tracks, but then we really are back to 1972. The porous nature of the border will probably present excellent black economy opportunities to both sides of it in the event of a 'hard' border without an agreement.

Again, please...its IRELAND.

And yes, those black market opportunities are probably now one of the biggest drivers for the new/nu/bestest/IRA...hels keep their racketeering going

It seems fairly clear now that our walk away option is totally unviable. It only remains to be seen whether the government will ignore that fact and do it anyway.

all the adults are leaving the room - when left on their own children seldom do the right thing

I knew it was going to be worth coming back on here after a few months off whilst nothing happened. Jesus christ, this is about to start getting really tasty. Bullshit is about to meet reality and it isn't going to be pretty for any of us.

well if he is unhappy about what the PM is doing he should stand for election to become the Prime Minister then he can decide what to do And implement it .

until then he should shut his trap and do what he is supposed to do as a civil servant.

impartial and independent civil service, my arse

We may be getting close to peak irony in terms of the end result of getting more control of our own laws being our government then disregarding or subverting them.

Going to be a tough sell for anyone apart from the most blind ideological supports.

If he did just shut his trap, then he’d be doing the complete opposite of what he should be doing as a civil servant in his position.

Agree. The BS is going to come crashing down and we will be back where we were. Soft brext / hard brexit / no deal, the decision still to be made. Brexiteers from across the spectrum still thinking they are going to get the best of all three. Some of them, possibly all of them will be disappointed.

Or he could stand by his principles and resign just like he has done.

Maybe as a lawyer he doesn't want to be part of a govt that unilaterally breaks an international treaty that self same govt has very recently ratified - its called professional integrity

yeah he can but he doesn’t need to come out with the political bollox. He is a civil servant not a fucking government minister

Lol. He has resigned on principle as have others in the civil service. I guess the government will have to find a lawyer who is happy to be told to get on with things that are unlawful. Thats going to work out great in the long run.
