Jose Gimenez

From the report. Very very very interesting.

Manchester City has presented a formal offer to Atlético de Madrid to acquire the services of José María Giménez. As AS has learned from sources from the Madrid team, the English team is offering 89 million euros for the signing of the Uruguayan central defender. In addition to that fixed, City offers 5 million in bonus for objectives , so the operation could reach 94 million euros.

Atlético de Madrid does not want to sell Giménez and when he learned of the interest of Pep Guardiola's team to sign him, he referred to his termination clause that amounts to 120 million euros . The City's sports director, Txiki Beguiristain, began to negotiate with Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, Atlético's CEO, and Andrea Berta, sports director, and the latest offer he has presented is 89 million plus another 5 million in bonuses, according to they say Atlético sources. This newspaper has also consulted Manchester City for this information and has received no response.

Pep Guardiola is looking for a top-level central defender to prop up his squad. The objective of City is to sign defensive talent to try to compete in the Champions League until the end because it considers that its main handicap is that it does not have the same talent in defense as in attack. He has been reinforcing himself in that area for several seasons (Stones, Laporte), but he has not quite succeeded.

Although it does not reach the amount of the rescission clause, the offer of 89 million euros is very important and will make Miguel Ángel Gil Marín think about it, because with that money he would correct the losses expected for next season as a result of the reduction of income due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Giménez is one of the captains of Atlético. Last season he was relegated to the bench after a series of injuries and took over the Felipe job. At the start of the League after the stoppage due to confinement, Simeone returned the title to him and was one of the most prominent in the 11-game mini-league and one of the few that was saved in the Champions League quarter-final match against Leipzig in which Atlético was eliminated.
The market closes on October 5 and, if Atlético rejects this offer from City, it will be necessary to see if the English team considers increasing the proposal and even offering the 120 million euros of the clause. To sign Rodri last season, he already paid his 70 million buyout clause. Giménez is comfortable at Atlético, but the offer that City makes him is very good. S Simeone will try to convince him to continue at his Atlético. With Rodrigo Hernández he did not succeed. Let's see what happens with Giménez.

Dont know anything about Giminez

Anyone watched him regularly enough to know if he is any good?

That's okay but can he actually last the season without getting injured? If we're talking ability then Stones has it all as well, just made of glass init? What's the point if we spend big money on this and he is just in and out of the team when needed most.

I couldn't disagree more.

Still think that's down to injuries and mental state because of his personal life mate. Did he not look great on two separate occasions playing alongside Otamendi and then Laporte in first parts of both title winning seasons? He's never going to be a Van Dijk but I think he has the potential to be good in his own way as a ball playing centre half. Just a shame his injuries and lack of focus due to problems in personal life have become a big hurdle.

Won't want the same injury issues to be an occurrence with the new signing for even more money.

This is not the lad for us, will be exposed in the system Pep plays (he isn't the only one!) but we would regret this signing imo.

Only averaged about 22 games a season for the last 5 years and appears to have problems with injuries. Missed 19 games last season through injury and 17 the season before. We would be utterly stupid to pay close to 100 million for a bloke who is injured for a third of the season.

Gimenez is a sick note

16/17 season- 10 games missed
17/18 season -7 games missed
18/19 season- 17 games missed
19/20 season - 19 games missed

Per transfermarkt

€90m+ fee is laughable

We need someone with pace because of the high line we play or we stay susceptible to the ball over the top.

We need to get someone. Usually I'd be all for the "wait for the right signing" ethos, but last year our defence was the main thing keeping us from a title challenge and we haven't strengthened nearly enough. If Gimenez is our best option then so be it, even if he's not perfect.

Gimenez is a world class defender, one of the leaders at Athletico, brilliant at 1v1 situation does not like to dive in. Stays on his feet, can pass out from the back and has a bit of pace, younger than koulibaly it's a win win for City. Athletico do need money quickly to balance finances next year for ffp Felix the money they payed is coming back to bite them. They though they would finish high up in the table with his addition but didn't and now need money to balance the books next year due to Covid. A lot of athleticos money comes from fans so their struggling with the current situation.
