With respect to the Mendy conversation, I think that it's very easy to sit on the outside and say "well I don't rate him and I think he's shit so we need a replacement surely". But to the people who work with Mendy everyday they still want to give him a chance. So it's not as black and white as you're making out. The 'issue' if you can call it that, is that currently there's no one to rotate Mendy with and when he's not fit we don't have a natural left back who can step in. We could do with that as an option, but I'm fairly convinced that we'll see Ake there whenever Mendy isn't fit.

I see people keep listing positions we should be buying in, but nobody is taking into account how squad numbers, and that the players who people want to discard are proven internationals on massive wages. It doesn't work like that. Clubs rarely just keep adding players without any regard for what they already have. City made it crystal clear at the start of the window there would be no midfielders brought in. They have KDB, Rodri, Ferna, Foden, Bernardo, Gundo. Six players for three positions and they're happy with those options regardless of how sexy that lad at Lyon looks right now.

I get that mate,I really do,but a few fresh faces never upset any top team,Mendy will be out injured no doubt again soon,I know the club cannot help that if he does, but nonetheless many will then say we should of bought a LB.........unless Cancelo fits the square peg round hole conundrums Pep makes for himself.

Honestly, it’s more amazing that people think he’ll be the same. He’s 32 and suffers lots of injuries. I expect Jesus to start more even when both are fit. Without the press we are nothing.
I agree with this. It's easy to forget now, but we'd originally targeted the Madrid second leg for his return and it looks like he's going to miss that by three or four months all said. Something's clearly gone wrong here. And that's not even accounting for the possibility of recurrence or other knock on muscle injuries that often result out of something like this (and Sergio knows a thing or two about muscle injuries). It's crazy to be counting on him this year.

Also im not saying a world class LB no , i mean we just need a LB that is good or decent, good at attacking and good at defending ask yourself this would Mendy get into any of the top 6 at LB. Mendy's legs have gone from injury we saw that against Leicester his pace and power is not what it was.

We cannot afford to rush to sign left back. Got to find the right fit. If it takes a season then so be it.
It’s taken several years. We don’t have a great history when it comes to left backs.

Clichy is probably the best we’ve had in recent years.

Grimaldo would be my choice, grew up in la masia knows how pep plays would fit us like a glove, good at defending good at attacking , all round decent player

Out of curiosity, if Ake plays there for example and against Leeds and plays well, will you then change your opinion?

On a more general note, anyone who watched the Leicester game should be painfully aware that our problems can't be solved in the transfer market. We have plenty of quality players. They have to be play better, be better organised, and be better coached.

The disrespect to Bernardo.

No disrespect to Bernardo at all. I don't think he has the pace to perform the deeper role. It's about getting the right balance. Gundogan for example has an excellent passing range but isn't mobile enough now to support the defence. Bernardo is better pressing on the front foot and being on the ball in the attacking third, picking passes or scoring goals. Foden has the energy and pace for the deeper role but not the discipline or positional sense required at this stage and you'd also be sterilising a player that can score/assist with such ease.

Only thing I agree with is Bellamy was better than Jesus and Mahrez, he really was a quality player.

Bellamy was a good player but not in Gabby's league, IMO. I also think that he would say the same; he is nothing if not passionately honest. As for Mahrez, Craig would marvel at his ability and bawl him off the park when it looked like he wasn't tracking his man.

I don't think anyone else in the squad can match the amount of running Bernardo does besides maybe Jesus. Bernardo is better than Foden too it isn't even close.

Good post and sums it up well.

Another left back has clearly been on the agenda for a long time. We were supposedly after Bertrand back in 2017 until Alves U-turned on us and we had to buy Danilo. Angelino was a stop gap signing that didn’t work at all, and it’s left us plugging the gap with midfielders for 3 going on 4 seasons now. Maybe they do want to give Mendy his chance but given the injury record it would be irresponsible to not get someone else in.

Midfield will just have to wait - we are stacked with options so you can understand why it’s low priority this window. Give it 12 months though with a view to how Foden or Bernardo operate in the centre and I wouldn’t be surprised to see us sign someone when Fernandinho’s contract is up.

With Ake,we will have to see,he seems a lot smaller than I thought, and maybe LB could turn out to be his future position, but unfortunately as that is the position currently exposed,he could be unfairly scrutinised if played there,I dunno, maybe a win at Leeds Saturday and we all might relax a bit

They last paragraph hits the nail on the head. The whole team needs to perform to the standards that won us 2 titles in a row. It feels like we are still patting ourselves on the back for those 2 outstanding years. Time to move on and go again.

Lite the fire under them khaldoon. We can challenge the scouse rats. Come on lads roar back to life.

Perfectly worded. Saw someone post that Aouar has the passing ability of Silva with the pressing of a madman. If that was the case he would have been worth 100 million plus. It's also a similar case with Dias, you see everyone unhappy with the transfer as they really wanted Kounde, but then you read what his ex coaches, teammates have been saying and surely he isn't just a below average player !
A lot of people fail to understand that even if you make a mistake you can't go and throw 60 million every summer trying to improve it in the hope that one sticks. All of these players have been extensively scouted by our team. No club operates on the flavor of the season transfer business.
I know I will be criticized for this but I rate Gundogan much higher than most people on here. It isn't easy being a defensive midfielder or a defender in our system.

Our problem at left back IMO has been that we don't have a natural defender there. Zin, Delph, and Mendy to different degrees were attacking full backs positionally unaware and defensively suspect. Ake will just fucking defend well, which is all I want right now. The attackers should be creating more, not Mendy/Walker.
