Leeds United (A) Post Match Thread

Not playing Fernandinho in evey game in midfield is a massive mistake that Pep cannot see. Same issue with not having another striker, he's left us short now and that's on him - can he rebuild a team? Never stuck around long enough. Can he buy a quality striker? Not sure he ever had to.

Some big questions to answer - if we continue in this vein of form is 2 good seasons from 5 good enough?

They were, but teams still pressed us from the front.

What we are now seeing is a consensus not to press Eddie and let the centre backs come up to halfway with the ball before they then engage our full backs or winger.

The play becomes less stretched out and our players are compressed into tighter areas, hence why our passing is allowed to go side to side.

Sane and a prime Fern would still have little impact on what other teams are now offering.

We have a plan A which can be visibly contained, barring a moment of brilliance or them also getting lucky in both refereeing decisions or snatched half chances.

Pep has got to respond to this. I think your point about running the clock down in our own half may need to be part of the solution. We have got to start keeping more men behind the ball more often, especially if we have a lead.

It's too easy to play through us so Pep has got to organise differently and the players have got to work harder out of possession.

I think Rodri is a talented player but he needs help from the other forwards and midfield.

Hopefully we can have the quadruple season Bernie back and get him playing regularly.

Not sure if you are serious because you can’t hope we play a 35 year old man every game. How can you blame not getting a striker on only pep? Do you think he is refusing to buy a striker

When the situation allowed for it, yes.

However, we don't play counter attacking football and never have looked to play it under Pep, barring the initial naivety teams some showed against us.

I've always argued we are even more devastating on the counter than Liverpool, but they are but brief moments in time (Bournemouth and Stoke home wins spring to mind) rather than any direct gameplan set up to orchestrate the counter.

We are a front foot team and always have been under Pep.

Unfortunately for him and us, it now has us on the back foot.

This is Pep's biggest test because, with this set of players, playing the front foot game as per normal is not looking like the solution so he has to adapt and play in ways he would not normally choose to. It's not about complete abandonment of principles but it is about adapting them. If he can't adapt, we have a problem. I do think he deserves some serious patience too because it may be hard for him to accept.

One thing the players should be doing is going and engaging in extra shooting practice of their own volition every day.

I'd have Sterling doing an extra hour a day learning how to use his fucking left foot!!

our second halves of games have been bad. Every other team seems just more fit. If they can stay in the game first half against us it’s been a problem

The strangest part of that is we actually come back to life in the last 15 mins. It seems the drop off is always for the first half an hour after half time.

Funnily enough I think we tried to be more cautious against Leeds after we had taken the lead. We weren't as wide open as against Leicester. Leeds had to work much harder for their chances than Leicester did. We'll never know what would have happened if Ederson had not gifted them one.
With a few more games I reckon Dias and Laporte could hugely change things for us. Let's hope Ake can do well at left back. He's a proper defender.

i just think we're in for another really disappointing season. yesterday's result was expected, and not saying i expected us to get humped by leicester but i had a feeling we'd drop points.

This is a team lacking in ideas, most teams have sussed us out.

Dont get me wrong, i think we'll have some great results this season but i think we'll be very inconsistent. Can see us dropping a lot of points to mediocre teams

Foden anonymous, Bernado 12 months out of form, no striker bought when we need a third option. Sterling is not a striker obviius when clean through twice and checked back. Also people underestimate what Gundogan does. He gets slaggedoff but does what Xavi did for Barca keeps the ball moving.
Both your first points are true about Foden and Bernardo. However, IMHO we should stick with these two as they give much needed energy as well as talent. Foden still has to develop consistency. Bernie still needs to play his way back into form. With a little perseverance, both could repay in dividends.

Exactly how I feel. We'll have great spells this season but be nowhere near consistent enough to challenge.

Teams simply were terrified of attacking us, because our press was so aggressive and the ball quickly got back and another attack launched with pace , power and incredible movement.

All gone last season and no signs of anything different so far this season.
Totally agree mate..the tiki taki has gone..ok we have injuries but even then the zippyness...is that a word..has gone..
Remember,we played Utd and passed the ball 44 times and they didn't get a sniff
Where has that gone????

Does anyone think maybe Pep may have lost the dressing room a bit, after the farce against Lyon maybe some of those players are thinking that he’s stuck in his ways and we won’t progress. This is not a hate Pep thing but KDB must be looking at this and the recruitment and may start looking away for his champions league trophy. There’s not a chance in hell we are getting near it at the moment and I think we lost our best chance to do it over the last two seasons. Pep doesn’t seem to want to trust certain players and they maybe a bit if last season mentality if Pep is going.

Haha! Just pulling your leg on the fact you've only posted 5 times in 9 years.
It amused me anyway.
I read all the comments on ear all the time...just don't post...till now...
Angry of Mayfair...if you remember the character...lol

This is gonna be a weird season. Nobody has had a proper pre season. Most clubs are gonna suffer fatigue and inevitable injuries and there will be lots of odd results with the best teams getting beaten more often than usual

We were always gonna suffer more than most at the start as we have had even less time to recover and prepare for the new season

I expect that as the season goes on we will get stronger compared to other teams and the strength of depth in our squad will come to the fore. No need to panic yet
While it’s true there hasn’t been a proper pre-season, players had an exceptionally long breather due to COVID.

I appreciate Pep and his philosophy but I would admire the coach more if he now changes the tactics. He learned off Cruyff and now if he wants to evolve he needs to learn again.

Sticking his head in the sand is only going to leave us beaten on the pitch.

We need to make teams come at us again. As tolmie alluded to. Pep must see what we all see he can only decide if he wants to implement the changes necessary or leave it to a new coach.
