Bluemoon Angling Thread

Man thats a great Perch nomatter who caught it, I have never targeted them but always happy when one turns up. My pb came on the canal about 26yrs ago at over 2lb but it doesnt count now as I reset my catch history when I took fishing up again a few weeks ago. Perch pb is now about 4oz , if I target them this winter I might even better that lol. Didsbury Dave has piqued my interest with that light spinner technique, sounds perfect for a cold days fishing as you can roam and keep moving, probably gonna start on the canal when the boats have given up.

Yeah, same here, especially as the canal here also has zander. Before then, though, I've got a tour of Shropshire next week and I've ordered some lobworms to see if I can get some decent perch out of the Severn.

Took the missus for a scenic float today trying to catch the last of all the colours, just threw a little spinner rod in the boat. Kin idiot! Fish were rising everywhere for three hours, saw one other boat all day. Did manage to land a few little Brooke trout but it coulda woulda been an epic day. Did see a lot of wildlife so still a great day

Not me but in the hood

Been out with the lure gear a few times recently. I'm trying to learn how to use jerk baits before next week's trip to Esthwaite Water. Had to buy a new rod and reel for it as these things are massive and require jerking through the water to imitate an injured fish. I blanked a couple of times, once I had a jack pike and a small perch, another time I hooked and lost a pike. As NN says, this is a great time of year, especially if the temperature doesn't drop too far.

Are those the lures that look like a giant tadpole ?

Some do. I've got some that were £20 and they don't look like they'd catch fish. "Buster Jerks" they are known as, and they are big in scandanavia. Got one in my bag actually:

(Cant seen to attach as file is too big)

The ones I practiced with are just like thin plugs which dive when you jerk. You need a little stubby, stiff rod and ideally a baitcaster reel so you can hold the rod down at 6 o’clock whilst you jerk it.

So we fished our annual club match against a rival english Bank over Wednesday - Friday this week. This is a competition that has been running every year for 44 years. I organise it on behalf of our club and this year obviously threw up some new challenges in making the format Covid compliant. We had a number of call offs because of obvious concerns but we managed to get 14 fly anglers together to enjoy each others company whilst socially distancing. The highlight was a dinner in Stirling on Thursday evening (moved from Friday at very short notice thanks Nicki). Bit surreal all of us sitting apart in a private dinning room but the food, wine and banter made up for it. There was a lot of soul searching regarding wether it should be cancelled but we are sensible sorts. There have been many firm friendships made between the teams over the history and

Anyway, to the fishing, practice on Wednesday, the Lake of Menteith was looking particularly gorgeous in the autumn sunlight. Here is my Boat partner enjoying a bit of Lunch in the shelter of the reeds.

Wednesday offered blustery conditions but you can always find shelter on the Lake and the trout were feeling frisky so I had a successful day and finished second top rod with 9, all on my own pattern of Diawl Bach (copper rib with a pearly head).

Tougher on Thursday when we fished for our Club cup in three teams and despite me only contributing 4 finished up on the winning team. Best rod had 12.

Friday was the match against the english Bank. And the Lake was at its most difficult during the morning it was dour hard fishing and with a blustery North East wind it was bloody cold on the mitts. The thing is when its like that not to give up, relax as much as you can and keep fishing simply and consistently and things will change. By about 1.00pm I was getting beaten 2-0 by my Boat partner but saw a sheltered small bay and for the first time saw a fish move on the surface. I covered where it had been and it took and fought very hard. After a couple of minutes it let go of the fly and that was that. However, a couple of minutes later another take and this time landed the fish. They were obviously lying in very shallow water at the very edge so for the rest of the afternoon that is where we targeted and I lost a couple more and picked up a couple of absolute lumps on a sparkler booby. My boat partner hooked one on his last cast and lost it. His rod nearly followed the fish in frustration. So a 3-2 win and overall my team won again and retained the trophy for another year.

Next year will be fished at one of the big English waters, I hope Pitsford which is just outside Northampton. I hope to god we have a vaccine by then and that all our English friends stay safe and are fit and healthy to compete again and we are back to a full strength 12 vs 12.

I’ve walked a long way this weekend. Friday I did a full circuit of a a big pennine reservoir trying my jerk baits. Blank. Yesterday I went to a smaller res and did the same, eventually landing one little pike on a Fox Replicant 4D trout. Instead of the ultralight perch fishing Ive been doing a lot of, this is proper piking, with 50lb braid, big lures and a stronger rod. It’s great to be able to retrieve lures from the snags with the heavy braid.

Im warming up for my annual two day trip on a boat at Esthwaite this week, lockdown dependant. We already cancelled in March.

Fancy doing more lure fishing this winter. Do you think it's just a case of covering a lot of water / fish finding rather than lure choice / techniques?

It’s a whole branch of the sport I’ve been learning for a couple of years now. Lure choice definitely matters, and sometimes you can make a change and suddenly get fish. As an example, the other week I saw a shoal of roach scatter so I put on a rubber rich style imitation and got a bit first cast. It can be a total waste of time if the fish aren’t active, and I blank much more than I catch. In general, if they are feeding and in the area you’ll get a hit or a follow within a couple of casts. If not then move on. It’s definitely a mobile form of fishing and suits shortish sessions, because it can get boring when you’ve been casting repeatedly for hours. If I were you, to start, I’d get some cheap ultralight gear and fish with small soft plastic lures. It’s a Cheap, easy and versatile way to start.

ill be having a walk round lymm dam on my days off,my first ever lure fishing jaunt,my plan to walk the entire lake and lob a lure in wherever i can, going to invest in a few rubber lures, and those korum squirmz, got the rod and reel, looking forward to it, if i enjoy it as much as im anticipating then i will invest in more specialized gear, i am going to file off the barbs, I've never used barbed hooks, not very confident in shoving my hand in a 35lb pikes mouth :)so the barbless should be easier, if they come off they do, its the thrill of the attack im looking for.
my one and only pike was the biggest buzz ive ever had fishing, bringing a roach in(on lymm dam and the flash of pike as it attacked, and as I've said before a whopping 3.5lb pike was landed :) heroic stuff

Out for the first time in months and months in the morning. Session on the Nene in Peterborough. Just back from balling in 30 balls between the two of us. Hopefully the bream are there, and fingers crossed a 50g feeder is enough to hold. Been in flood recently, but been watching it, and has been fining off nicely over the last few days.

Well done on the prebaiting. Let us know how you get on mate. Surely you’ll get some.

Didn't realise the flow was that strong there - it looks almost like a big canal compared to the trent.
