Bit of news on fishing, which just appears to be further confirmation there will be some form of extended transition period.

EU and UK negotiators are closing in on a fishing compromise that would see decisions on the exact quotas European boats would be able to land in British waters kicked into the long grass to avoid disagreements torpedoing a trade deal’

Excellent if true - and more evidence that we are at last represented by a professional negotiation team

Your next mission impossible will be explaining why last week it was a good idea not to hamper our US trade deal negotiators on lower food import standards and this week the government will hamper our negotiators: “Chlorinated chicken and hormone-injected beef are already banned in the UK, and we will not negotiate to remove that ban in a trade deal”.

Yes, because no negotiating team has ever suggested booting difficult decisions into the long grass when faced with a hard deadline.

Good news for Macron too if he can hold off any final decision until after the Presidential elections in 2022.

Seems that whatever deal happens (if any), there'll be no shortage of stuff that gets kicked down the road for future discussion with the status quo being maintained for now. The biggest thing to resolve is the imposition of customs checks on day 1; if that can be kicked down the road the economy's got a much better chance to adapt. For that to happen though, we'll have to accept an extension of adherence to EU standards.

Yep - 'An extension dressed up as a deal'. Something that has been on the cards ever since BoJo stated there would be no more extensions.

The thing with temporary arrangements is they have a knack of becoming permanent. I would imagine that if we do a deal-extension (with SM / CU membership like status) it will require some very solid comitment to follow EU rules. Breixteers may will lose their shit as that may well be a limbo state that we never leave.

Brexiteers losing their shit is a small price to pay if it stops the country going into a post Covid post Brexit depression.

Now - read your words again and ask yourself if there is something there that could help you explain to yourself why a 3 year transition arrangement decided at this point could be a good deal for the UK

Who knows - you might be close to accidently tripping over some negotiations logic - but I won't hold my breath

I think some are are going to lose their shit whatever happens given they cant even get their heads around the basic facts. John Redwood the other day saying the majority of people think no deal is the best out come.

Reality is that 50% of people think we were wrong to vote to leave the EU and only 38% now thing we were right to vote to leave.

Tories lie so easily ..... it just comes naturally to them

Some of us still holding our breath from a week ago on your promise to address my points on fishing.

Now we can hold our breath again for the secret negotiations logic to be revealed. Dan Brown could write this.

So the UK has folded like a cheap suit but the EU has agreed to let the news out quietly long after Boris has done one. Sorry "got Brexit done".

Pfft 50% in a poll? We all know by now that you need more than 52% nowadays. Actually I think some want two thirds so we are stuck with being out I guess.
