COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Greater Manchester had one of its best days in many weeks.

Big drops everywhere. Not a single borough went up.

A total of 1786 cases - a massive 616 down on yesterday and only one number lower than this in past 3 weeks.

Not a huge fall on the ratio of the NW overall as Merseyside etc were down too. But at 48% of the NW regional total in GM it is the first sub 50% for a few days.

Elsewhere though there were some big numbers. Birmingham had 861 - highest in a good while. And Leicester 243 is also their highest in weeks or months. So The Midlands increase today is easy to understand.

Leeds at 551 were also up to their highest I have seen.

Bradford was lower today but at 444 well over anywhere in GM. It entered the 4000 club at 4023 today too.

Elsewhere in the NW Blackburn bucked the downward trend of the region and had its highest number in weeks at 198 - which put its pop sore up by the highest in the UK today (132) to 4971. Well ahead of the rest and sure to be the first place in the UK to enter the 5000 club tomorrow.

On Merseyside Liverpool recorded the lowest score I have ever seen here. Only 147 cases - it was over 500 pre tier 3. Its pop score rose by just 29 - the kind of level we used to see in the summer.

Knowsley too was the lowest I have ever seen it at just 50. It was not far short of 200 when entering tier 3.

No idea if these numbers are real or a one off or down to testing issues or a genuine fall in the region. The fall in hospital numbers we saw in the NW yesterday seems to suggest it is real in some sense not an illusion.

I guess time will tell.

What we DO know is this has nothing to do with the lockdown just introduced.

Might at least mitigate against the bad news that a new mutation of the virus seems to have occurred that could stop vaccines working properly as it makes the virus easier to target the immune system.

Assuming that story breaking today on this is true.

Devi Sridhar definitely suggests it's something to be concerned about.

The WHO have said lockdowns don't work, Wales has helped prove that. Shame we are not listening to them on this one and going off made up figures.
Where have the WHO said lockdowns don't work?
The only thing I have heard them say is that it is better to control the virus by other means if you can because of the effects on the economy. I've never heard them say that they don't work Though I could be proved wrong.

The WHO have said there is no reason to think it would compromise a vaccine. Who is Devi Sridhar and how would she have this info above the WHO?

I presume you are referring to the mink mutation?

It's serious enough for Denmark to be culling 17million mink.

She's a global health advisor, who repeatedly warned about the potential for Covid in January when others were keen to play it down.

I guess the flip side is if they've identified it and determine how that strain works, they can add elements to a vaccine to counter it and maybe understand immune system compromising better? Better than it running rampant.

have i got this right:
if you live with someone who is positive you have to self isolate
if you meet up with someone out of household who turns out to be positive later on, you dont have to self isolate

correct?

Depends on how close and for how long

Correct, Unless you have been told to by track and trace or your employer has asked you to.

When to self-isolate

Self-isolate immediately if:

cheeers i'm a little confused, basically a mate was out walking with someone on Monday and that someone tested positive Wednesday (mate has no symptoms etc). But because this is nothing to do with track and trace he doesnt have to?

So I got pretty ill about three weeks ago. Very mild sore throat at night, bit hot and cold. Constant dull headache. Got really bad at one point, smelling wierd shit, wierd tinnitus, cold feeling in ears and toes. Loss of energy, feeling really bad after a little exercise. Ordered a test but lost the swab! Eventually gave up on pushing myself to get better, just rested and took it easy for a couple of weeks. Started to push back a couple of days ago, bit more exercise, getting out and about.

Last night, began all over again. Frozen stiff for hours, really sharp sore throat.

I mean, it's probably not covid, just a random sore throat from some kind neighbour (always coughing in the corridors).

But FFS. Do I isolate, all over again??? Would be about the fourth time this year I've had to make this decision.
