Vaccines will help considerably as will the new cleaning routines places are adopting. But we are not going to get rid of it.

Fair enough, prob used wrong words, but I mean returning to a life we had pre covid.

I'm not saying we should ignore it, I've been in favour of doing everything we can but we have to remain human throughout this and locking people away for the most important period of the year isn't right.

If strangling the virus was critical then why are people at work and why are the kids at school? We cannot prioritise the economy and life in general just around society remaining functional.

Christmas in itself could be a major morale booster, it's something for people to look forward to and if handled properly cases could actually be reduced with the right advice. The reason why is for example if I had to self-isolate to spend christmas day with my gran then I will.

I believe by the summer both here and across Europe Covid will have become a low risk due to the vaccines, and as the vaccines become better it will pose virtually no risk at all. It maybe that it is never completely eradicated and to vaccinate globally of course is going to take quite some time and considerable challenges will have to be over come.

You yourself may be prepared to self isolate to spend a day with granny but most wont. If you choose to do that you would get no condemnation from me as clearly you would be unlikely to give it to her, i would call that common sense but not many have it, even less so at Xmas.

As for the morale booster surely the vaccine news covers that? The fact I might be able to sod off to Portugal in a month or two has cheered me up no end.

The three guys with the gifts don’t look like they come from the same household.

And yes, that is what Christmas is about, not shopping, pubs or parties. But you can’t even go to church to celebrate His birth.

Disappointing. Was expecting the picture of Hans Gruber falling from the top of Nakatomi Plaza.

Some Catholic churches are still open for private prayer. But this is limited to one person and for a short period only. My mum was receiving Communion at home but this has had to stop. We're fortunate at school that the Parish Priest can still come and see staff/class. We'll get there, the vaccine looks very promising.
 
Pfizer: 170 cases of the disease in its trial of more 43,000 volunteers, of which 162 were observed in the placebo arm and 8 were in the vaccine group.

Amazing figures and just fantastic to see.

A long way to go, but together with Moderna, the light is there at the end of the tunnel. If the Oxford/AZ jab is anything close to this, we should be back in the stadium for next season, I think.

I was taking mum regularly when they reopened. She has cancer which has spread to her eyes and can’t see well enough to go alone. This will be her last Christmas and I’ll be gutted if we don’t get to go. Personally I find the experience really depressing. Sitting apart, masks on, no singing, no communion wine, no cup of tea and chatter. But it’s important to her and that’s what matters.

Fingers crossed. Saw Robert Peston yesterday claim that the Oxford vaccine will "only" have 70% efficacy. No idea what he's basing that on though.
 
As an outsider, 170 out of 43,000 is quite a small proportion. I mean it'a not even 1% of the test pool so what are the assurances that it is representative?

I'm basing the above on the recent posts I've read with the headline news.

Interesting.
I was wondering how this mRNA (seemingly so successful atm) will play against the more traditional vaccines and whether these new methods will trump the older ones?
I have no idea how these things work however, so purely guess work on my behalf.

Like to explore the idea that mRNA vaccines could work very well against other viruses to however.
