Technically not. Legally, perhaps not, either?

If he signs a pre-contract in January that will be binding.
Will he join in January though? Will anyone at Barca take the blame for selling him? I think they will rather let him walk away after his contract is over ,with the narrative "we tried but he wanted to go".

Yeah, signing the best player in the world would be a definite risk.

I don't think there's any point pretending there's no risk in a footballing sense because there clearly is, as there is with every transfer.

In terms of all the boring marketing shit, it's an open goal. In terms of what's actually going to happen on the pitch, there's no guarantee whatsoever.

City signing Messi would transform the club. We would be unrecognisable from our current position. He will make that much of impact.

This impact will also last long term.

Manchester City would be going down in the history books as the club who managed the impossible by signing the greatest player of all time in Lionel Messi from his beloved Barcelona.

Going off the above article, they reckon a club gets 15% from each shirt sold......they reckon Messi sells 2M shirts per year worth $45m (£33m) to his team.
Overall they reckon he's worth about $175m (£130m) per year for the team he plays for.
Could all be bollocks though.
It is kinda bollocks.

Not even disputing the numbers but Messi sells 2M shirts though it is fishy:

: Usually, FC Barcelona is selling around 2 million kits per season ).

The important point is Messi helps selling Barça shirts to Barça fans and casuals. If Messi goes to Manchester City a big chunk of those 2M buyers won't buy the City shirt. City will get new fans and will sell largely more than usual but signing Messi doesn't mean you are going to bag $45M in shirt sales alone. Far from it. What you'll get is better sponsorship down the line and maybe even an improved contract/bonus by Puma.

Didn't seem to affect his wanting to leave in the summer....
Yeah i know , just wondered if he will consider it for jan , he has been at barca a long time , he might want to say goodbye to a full crowd in the summer , i think last summer he was so angry , now things have cooled he might be considering different things . I think he will end up staying put

That in itself is a good thing surely ?

The profile of the club and the CFG will be increased too.

Shirt sales shite is really important to the rag/dipper fuckwits so really hoping we don't become tarnished with that.

Of course it would be a good thing. I don't see any negative side from City perspective if they can get Messi on a free.

I was just pointing out that he won't bring this rumoured $45M increase in shirt sale.

I wonder if not being to say goodbye to barca and hello to our fans plays a part in coming in jan or not
I doubt it. If he was indeed prepared to come in the summer, bar the legal fight, he wasn't bothered about goodbyes and hellos

In fear of getting lambasted by certain posters again. Hypothetically how will you feel when Foden loses 'his' right wing position if/when Messi signs? Because Foden won't be playing centrally very often at all with Kev in the team, the only position where Messi fits is RW.
