Bluemoon Angling Thread

well my light lure fishing on canals ,lakes and everywhere is going well, really enjoying the freedom, been getting out quite a bit, with some success , was at queensmere dam in swinton,(bit of a park lake without the park) had two ok perch, nothing massive, however i think ive finally cracked it, imo i have been missing quite a few bites, now i am reading it better the fish are starting to come.

i would like a bit of advice, i bought my rod and reel combo a few years ago, but never really started light lure fishing until recently, the rod and reel combo i would class as starter, the reel is very clunky and feels like it may fall apart :) the rod is ok , quite light, but it doesnt say how light on it.

i am after a new rod and reel, what are the makes i should be going for as the next step up, or in peoples opinions should i go all armani and buy brilliant because it will last me longer.

hope that makes sense :)

to put it another way, if you knew what you know now, what rod and reel would you buy :)
You don't need to break the bank for ultralight perch gear.

You want a 6-7 foot spinning rod, often described as an LRF (Light rock fishing) rod. It's strength is denoted by it's casting range in grams. Mine is 2-12g, and I use a 15-45g one for my pike fishing. These are fine:

For the reel, don't get a really crappy one, spend £40-50. Any spinning reel in 2000 size (the bigger the number, the bigger the reel). I have this one:

If you want to run anything past me put a post on here.

I have used Seaguar for pulling lures. The same manufacturer makes Riverge Grand Max which is what many of the match boys use. That was the brand I had such trouble with. Now I use nothing but Froghair which is flexible for Floro and has amazing knot strength. Never go bigger than 10lb but then you are after bigger fish than me!
I won't use Seaguar under the 19lb as I had troubles in the past with their lighter lines.
I want to do some more sea trouting and reservoir fishing next season. (Hopefully.)

I will give the Frog a go!

I have the 8-6" 10-35gm rod. I really like the rod and Korum is no nonsense quality gear at the right price. I also bought a baitcast reel which was a mistake. They aren't easy to use and don't cast as far as a traditional fixed spool reel.

i was going to ask about the baitcaster, but decided against it :)

Korum rods all look like great spec for the price. I was nearly tempted by a pair of Korum carp rods in the summe - but then had a word with myself about turning into 'one of them' and never thought of it again ;-)

Shimano Sahara RD Reel - 2500 £39.99

Shimano Catana EX Telespin Rod - 1.8m - Light - 3-14g - Light - 3-14g £39.99

ive had shimano reels before and always felt they were decent, never had a shimano rod, but I'm hoping the quality is the same

I can't master using mine mate. The central drum has a tension knob that has to be slackened off to get any distance, and if I forgot to trap with my thumb when the lure hits the water it's an instant birds nest tangle. I use braid which is more expensive than mono.

I haven't got on the bank for a few weeks. Supposed to be going with my mate after pike this week, I need get my gear together.

I have a pair of twin tip Korum 1.75 and 2.25lb TC rods. Cracking rods that I use for barbel and light carping. Can also be used as pike rods, even light beach casting at a pinch.

i used one sea fishing once, im more comfortable with the spinning reel, just sorted my wind knots out, don't want anymore tangles :)

I’ve got two of the same rods mate. Totally agree that for all rounders like us they are really versatile. They cover all my barbel fishing from the Dane to the tidal Trent. They are great for floater fishing for carp or stalking. They are also just right in the stronger size for pike fishing as you say. I regularly recommend them to people. If you are a barbel angler particularly I can never understand people not buying twin rip rods like this. Even I’d you only fish one river the heavy tip suits the flood situations and the lighter one suit low water.

hope you’re well by the way mate. We never did sort that Trent session out. I’ve only been there once this season.

That rod sounds perfect for perch. A 2500 reel might be a touch too big but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. If it’s Shimano it will be decent gear.

I’d say yes, that stuff will be perfect. Get some 4-8lb braid on the reel and enjoy.

can’t remember if I mentioned before but it’s a terrible time of year for lure fishing because the water temperatures are plummeting and the fish are lying dormant. As soon as we get a warm front they’ll switch on again.

I'm better than I was mate, thank you. Yeah will be next year on the Trent for the barbel. My mate showed me a pair of Free Spirit 2.25 TC rods he recently won in a competition. Wow, they are a thing of beauty. Said he would let me try one out, I can't afford to splash out £250 on a rod even if it's the best.

Snorky has invited me down to the Wye to do a spot of piking. Well snorks, would be rude not to. See you over Christmas, hopefully pal.
