Fucking hell:

COVID case rates above 1,000 cases per 100,000 people in eight areas

COVID-19 case rates are now above 1,000 cases per 100,000 people in eight local areas of the UK, the latest data shows.

Three of the areas are in Wales: Merthyr Tydfil, where the rate has jumped week-on-week from 926.6 to 1,299.6, which is the highest rate anywhere in the UK; Bridgend, up from 777.3 to 1,122.1; and Blaenau Gwent, where the rate has climbed from 698.5 to 1,006.3.

The other five areas are in England:

  • Thurrock (a huge jump from 435.9 to 1,178.7)
  • Havering (up from 547.1 to 1,123.5)
  • Epping Forest (up from 448.8 to 1,078.3)
  • Basildon (up from 650.6 to 1,055.0)
  • Medway (up from 641.2 to 1,037.1)
All figures are based on data published on Monday afternoon and are for the seven days to December 17.
That is as grim as it gets.

We must have been very lucky then. Six staff in one primary school is unlucky. Did they get it from each other, pupils or just randomly when out of school settings?

I agree that these half hearted measures are not working.

“work from home if you can” - is very much open to interpretation and judging by the M6 most nights over the last few months, is largely being ignored by a lot of people/companies, mine included who whilst not saying you can’t work from home, have definitely treated those who have differently.
No way of knowing with absolute certainty but looks like staff picked it up at work. Mainly in Early Years. Impossible to social distance etc.

When they say its much more transmissible, what does this mean? Does it stay live on surfaces for longer? Does it travel through the air for a further distance?

I think at the moment the main evidence is simply that it's transmitting faster in the community - a lot faster - than the other variants current.

The main theory seems to be that there's a higher viral load in noise and throat, so more transmission by all routes.

But nobody really knows at all yet, I don't think.

Got a feeling the whole country will be in tier 4 soon and schools will be closed for a extended period

Without doubt we will all be in tier 4 but I can’t see them shutting all schools. Maybe secondary and above, doesn’t make sense to close younger than that.

Astonishing figures, 1% of the population testing positive every week. The actual numbers infected are probably several times higher.

Dread to think what hospitalisations and deaths will follow.

Stay home blues.

It’s fucking frightening. As much as we might not like it, we should all be in tier 4 by now. Even people who I know have by and large exercised commonsense have been tier jumping to go on the piss.
