COVID-19 — Coronavirus

20, 917 in UK hospitals tonight. And 1529 on ventilators. We are 700 away from the highest number of patients in April at the height of the first wave. Passing that milestone at Christmas as we almost certainly will is a grim prospect.

Happily still a way to go to get to the 3301 on ventilators as we have better treatments now but as I have emphasised for a while we need to watch the % of patients to ventilators in the areas where this new mutation is prevalent as the numbers on them in London with the same number of patients are much higher than were on them in the NW with the same number of patients just a few weeks ago.

One possible reason is that the NW then had almost entirely the older virus strains and London now has the new one in the majority.

But there are other possible reasons too, of course.

Hope it is one of them and not that the new strain can make you more sick as that would be horrendous news.

Out of interest, is there any stats on the mortality rate compared to the first wave? Would hope that those better treatments are showing in those by now.

How long have they been checking for variants?

I assume we’ve had several if not more since the beginning of this without knowing as much as we do now.

They've been checking from the very start.

Thousands of variants are known, there's an explanation of where this one sits here

Yes, a lot I'd think but I doubt they'd mention any with very small numbers.

They'll be looking for rising frequencies in the PCR data, and will be able to identify anomalies that are worth looking into further. I think they will have been looking for mutations from the PCR data as soon as they had a significant enough data set size.

Regional hospital details in England:

LONDON Patients up 192 in day to 3559 - 1066 up in past 7 days. Ventilators up 22 to 400 - up 108 in past 7 days.

MIDLANDS Patients up 58 to 3447. Ventilators down 2 to 252.

NE/YORKSHIRE Patients down 34 to 2496. Ventilators up 5 to 154.

And NORTH WEST

Patients up 7 to 2406 (was 2322 last week)

Ventilators down 12 to 153 (was 162). Below all the above regions and from over 100 more than London a month ago to 247 less is remarkable turnaround caused by this superspreading mutation there.

I thought my coughing and sore throat, bad as it is/was, would be the end of it.

I can't quite explain what happened to me when I went to bed last night, it was like some bizarre out-of-body-experience.

I was asleep for about an hour when I jumped awake with a horrible metallic taste in my mouth?

I couldn't believe it, soaked head-to-toe in ice-cold sweat, like I'd been for a cold shower in my T-shirt.

I'd no temperature, didn't feel hot, whatsoever, but spent the rest of the night with the shivers.

I'm in front of my desk today, never really have sick days, but there is little snap in my legs.

I consider myself pretty fit, but it just goes to show how it can grab a hold quickly even after four days in.

I'm even more fully appreciative now how easy it is to kill older people or those who have underlying health conditions.

My wife is still tired but my 13-year-old boy is pretty much back on form after nine days in for their own positive results.

We are all out of a 16-day isolation on New Year's Eve. There is hopefully some symbolism I want to take from that...

Stay safe my fellow Blue Mooners. I've made more friends on this board during the last ten months, than I have in ten years in my 'normal' day-to-day life.

They say you find out who your true friends are when the chips are down, I've since discovered all these people I've worked alongside down the years are only there if you can remain useful to them.

Have a wonderful Christmas, best you can, knowing I will see many of you for the first time in hopefully a brighter 2021.

x
Hope you feel better soon mate, and have some sort of Christmas!

I'm completely depressed with the news. The new UK strain bad enough, now an even worse South African one over here. Give it a month until they tell us everything's gone to shit and by the way the vaccines won't work either. But I'm sure Johnson will promise us all we'll be in a great position by October.
Well if that happens, it won’t just be us that are in deep shit - it’ll be the whole fucking world! I don’t think it will get anywhere near that bad regarding effectiveness of the vaccines against different strains though.

Regional scoreboard:

Again southern areas a little down, east up again,

Big rise in the Midlands.

Up north NE falls, Yorkshire up and still below 2000 but NW up by double Yorkshire to its highest numbers in 33 days.

it's a horrific thought that can't be ruled out

Nowhere is there any information on how many people have been vaccinated, you would think they would be publishing the figures to reassure us. I suspect things are not going as planned.
It was 500,000 yesterday i think , it is a huge logistical effort and we are just at the start of it
