Rodney Marsh Q&A "I left my heart in Manchester"

Towards the end of that season, Joe Corrigan got injured, and Ron Healey took his place. The defence didn't appear to have much confidence in him, and he was often suspect against tall forwards. I went to every game in that season (71/2) both home and away, and I remember he was beaten in the air twice by Ron Davies, against Southampton away, for their goals, something that would not have happened if 6' 5" Joe had been there.
Don't forget, we lost the league by one point to Derby that year, so it's a bit unfair to blame him alone.
Yes Joe got injured when we beat Chelsea Rodneys debut, then he came back for the last game of the season our win v Derby. You are spot on about Healey I think he cost us.

Played against him when he was with the Rowdies. He came off the bench, scored a goal, ran past our bench and said, “That’s me done!” and laughed as he ran off!

He was a top, top player when he played for us. We were a team of mostly Manchester grafters at the time, and it was like we had brought in some silky, stylish, flash from Dahn Sarf, but he didn’t half light up the field.

He was, perhaps, the most skillful player in the League for a big man, and some of his goals were ridiculous!

Dennis Tueart was my fave as a kid

(liked the way he ran and celebrated his goals, which I copied!), but my slightly older sister adored Rodney...as I’m sure many a Maine Rd lass did!
Who did you play for in the NASL mate?

Was one of my two favourite players for a long time. Wonderful to watch on a good day, truly an entertainer. Audacious at times. Will never forget him nutmegging Gordon Taylor (PFA Chairman) when he was a Birmingham player and then turning back a megging him again.
I remember that and I’m sure that was why Taylor always seemed to have a downer on us

Kipper Macrae in the background ?

Listen to Rodney on his Grumpy Pundits show most mornings on Sirius radio. Always sticks up for the Blues although we do seem to get praise rather than be the pantomime villains we are portrayed as in the UK media

Didn't he also tale the ball into the corner and then knock it into touch off Rag players to waste time.

Not sure if it was then but I'm sure I saw him take a quick throw in and bounce the ball off the back of an opposing player then waltz off with the ball.
Corner flag piss boiling was at home, October 1972, 3-0 win. At 39mins on this video. “Like shelling peas!”

Wonderful stuff. Unforgettable. Thanks.

Not my first Derby but my first home Derby as a season ticket holder.
Can’t understand how they denied Colin a hat trick in that game, the ‘own goal’ was already going in. If it was Sir Combover Tout or the ungrateful transplant queue jumper, they would have given them the hat trick

Did I pick Rodney up wrong with the seasons.
He said he was a sub at the start and his first goal against the rags was at the swamp as a sub in an 3/1 win.
Signed at the end of the March transfer deadline
Allison couldn’t wait to get Marsh into the side and despite not quite recovering from a slight groin strain and not being totally fit, he was plunged into the home game with Chelsea, with Towers relegated to the bench. More than 53,000 turned out to see his home debut – some 10,000 above the average attendance that season, and City edged the game 1-0.

Thanks for that Longsight,The King took the piss out of their midfield on his own,how fucking good did the Kippax look, and i was in there,
Happy days.
Loved Franny giving that dirty red bastard O’Neill a dig (8.00) after a dangerous knee-high foul, especially as Best’s assault on Glyn Pardoe would still have been fresh in the memory. Think he cracked him one off the ball second half as well!

Who did you play for in the NASL mate?
Played in the Indoor version for Chicago in 1986-87, before getting a job as a Financial Analyst and going semi-pro! (No money in football back then, and not that much now, unless you’re a franchise player!)

I was drafted by San Diego Sockers in the MISL and went out there for awhile. Kaz Deyna and Ade Coker (WHU) were their big English players, and they had an English manager whose name escapes me. However, their financial offer was not that hood and basically relied on me having another job to live in San Diego, plus my wife was raised in Chicago and already had a job there, so the choice wasn’t that hard.
