Regions in the United Kingdom
The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. With the exception of England, each of these countries has its own parliament. Matters of common concern such as foreign and defence policy are, however, decided by the UK parliament in London.
The UK has a population of 66 million: 55.6 million in England, 5.4 million in Scotland, 3.1 million in Wales and 1.9 million in Northern Ireland.
England has nine official regions, each with its own
Enterprise Zone. These are specially designated areas where the UK government supports economic growth by means of special tax rules and government support.
