Liam Delap - Ipswich player 2024-25

To be honest he could be. When Haaland was his age, he was still in Norway, about to start a season where he got 12 league goals in 25 games. In Norway.

Some players just hit the ground running in senior football and never look back, and you don't know who's going to do it until they get a chance to jump in at the deep end.

I'd put money on Delap scoring 12 goals in Norway next season if we loaned him to Molde for whatever reason.

Part of the deal when you go to a big club's academy though, is you're probably going to be held back a bit. Foden would have been starting every game at 17 and been bought for stupid money 18 months ago if he'd come through at Lyon or Benfica.
And similarly, at the same age as Delap is now, Harry Kane was starting a season at Millwall where he would score 9 goals in 27 games. Would Delap score 1 in 3 at a Championship club? I think so, yes. He’d probably score more.

Shearer,a player Liam has similarities with, scored 1 in 5 while at the Saints,it wasnt till he moved to Blackburn at 22 did he really become prolific.

So,to not recognise our boy's potential and believe he could be a player of similar standing to those mentioned,is both folly and unfair.

Haha as good as Haaland! Nice one
He *could* be, yes. I`ve watched Haaland regularly since he broke through at 17 in Norway, and I`ve also watched most of Delap's games for the EDS (and first team), and in my opinion Delap is better than Haaland was at 17/18. I`m a Norwegian and absolutely love Haaland, so I don`t have a single good reason to downplay how good he is or was.

Haaland at Delap's age was still playing in Norway. Even though Haaland was playing against men, and Delap is mostly playing against kids, I don`t believe the Norwegian league is any harder than PL2. For instance, there was a young Norwegian over at Liverpool (Edvard Tagseth) who struggled for game time for their U18s, and left them in 2019 for Rosenborg, the best team in Norway. In his first full season he made 28 appearances for them, including some Europa League games. Lots of clubs in the Norwegian league field youth players (most of them far worse than the average PL2 players), in other words Haaland wasn`t exactly facing world-beaters. He got 12 goals in 26 appearances in his last season (at the same age as Delap is now), and I`m certain Delap would beat that.

There`s no one denying that Haaland is better than Delap to this day, but with the right coach and a good plan Delap could potentially reach Haaland levels. Haaland is quicker and stronger, but Delap is far more technically gifted, and has better linkup play, dribbling and passing (albeit a little inconsistent). Out of the 2, I think Delap is slightly more suited to our style of play, but Haaland is the overall better player at the moment and would be the safest bet to replace Kun on the short term

You have me thinking we should keep £100 million in our wallet and stick with Delap.

Good post,as i agreed,it would be foolish to not think Delap could become an equal talent, however, the key word is 'potentially' where as with Haaland,we have a proven product.

And that is what we need next season, which is unfortunate timing in this respect.

As FantasyIreland points out Haaland is already a proven product, while Delap could potentially become world class some time in the future.

Even though I think Delap is slightly more suited to our play, I have no doubt Haaland would be an amazing striker for us. His passing, first touch and dribbling has improved a lot since he was 17, and with his mentality and immense work rate it would only get better. His pace, physicality, finishing and most importantly his movement is absolutely incredible. Would score a shitload of goals for us

Can’t beleive he’s gonna play for the U18s, while Brewster has been called up for U21 after doing the square root of fuck all
I think the U21s are only calling players who play senior football, based on that list, regardless of form.

I still think you should reward exceptional talent in the academy system for the U21s, but clearly they see different.

Day dreaming but... I'm guessing that if we sign Haaland it'll be as a wide striker because that's the only place we get space for him to use his powerful running and instinctive shooting.

Center striker needs to be more mobile, dropping deep, etc. Maybe Delap would be better in that role if that's what he does in the youth teams.

Fwiw I’m pretty sure he would be in the U19’s but they only have a training camp and whilst he can still qualify for the U18’s, they have a game against Wales so can see why he’s with them. Incidentally the game is live on YouTube for anyone interested (Monday 29th March KO 12pm ) Callum Doyle, CJ Egan-Riley, Alex Robertson, Samuel Edozie join Delap in a very talented squad.

Plenty of future opportunity for Liam to get higher recognition,he hasnt long turned 18 and its only very recently that his game has started to look more complete and consistent, while hopefully learning to channel his aggression correctly.
He needs a couple of first team outings before people get too carried away with the notion he is being treated harshly.

I see Alex Scott from the appropriately named Bristol is also in the squad.
Looking forward to seeing Alex in her kit
