Tests 1, 410, 000 approximately. Quite a bit down
Not sure what's the "right" number of tests, given that we bumbled along seemingly happily on less than half that number for months ?

Seems plenty enough to me given very few of those tests will be given to symptoms. In an ideal world we'd all be tested daily I guess, so there'd be no issue at all of asymptomatic cases being missed !

I know and the ups and downs have not made much difference recently. But just neesed to point out they were about a quarter million down on yesterday.

Still likely not impacted the positivity rate.

What is true today i a very strange big drop in the North West cases.

Whilst most places are down NW is down so much several other regions - not just Yorkshire - which has been all week - are higher. Even London and the South East are higher today.

I suspect a glitch or low testing locally.

But at just 386 in the NW - down 421 in one day - that is the lowest total in around 6 months.

Still half expecting to see it corrected.

IF this North West fall today of 421 from 805 yesterday to 386 today is true and has no mitigating issue such as delayed test results etc it is amazing news.

That is the lowest NW score in at least 6 months. Probably more as I gave up looking.

Moreover a large number of it comes from Greater Manchester. A huge fall of 270 from 457 to 187.

This is really hard to understand without there being a glitch but hopefully not

As you might imagine some extraordinary scores today which I will post below!

we are nearly out of this! Few more weeks and life will be relatively normal again certainly in this country. Map to freedom seems to have been timed very well. Slightly overly cautious but that’s wise.

Trafford became the first place I have tracked since last Summer whose Pop Score rose by NIL. As in too small to increase it even by1.

It had just 2 cases - by miles the lowest in the region since likely last July.

It was not alone in doing well though.

Every GM borough bar Oldham had a Pop Score rise in single figures. And even Oldham's was only 10.

Bury was second with just 11 cases with Bolton on 1 more at 12 and Stockport one more at 13.

All low scores in 2021 and likely well back into 2020 for these boroughs.

Rochdale had 20, Oldham and Tameside - not struggling much today - on 23.

Wigan had 24 and Salford 25.

Leaving Manchester 'struggling' (not) with 34 - its lowest in as far back as I have looked so far,

As you might imagine pretty much everywhere here has a big week to week fall in Pop Score numbers.

It might all go gaga tomorrow when the truth dawns - if this is just a one off glitch.

But hey it is a very good day indeed. And the biggest % fall in a day I recall seeing for GM - 8.4% to 48.4%

That is about spot on where GM should be population wise in the NW so maybe this is NOT a dream after all.

That is indeed great news.

It's a shame the lead item on LBC (not BBC for a change) is going to be "The "R" rate is going up, are we safe to continued to ease Lockdown" !

I despair, the "R" rate is such a misused measure by the media. While it's 0.6-0.9 cases are plummeting.

Hospital data was also down again. Though paradoxically North West was the only region NOT to fall on both measures. Its patients fell a little but ventilators stayed at 90.

Will post the full data later but there are now under 5000 in hospital with Covid in England (4841) and under 6000 in the UK.
And just to add to this, the latest data from icnarc out today;

1360 in critical care and 2233 in acute wards. Roughly 1st Nov levels. (England, Wales and NI)

few weeks away. Media are doing a good job to not go overboard with the positive data. Cautious is the biggest asset at the moment

Find my interest in this thread disappearing more and more every day, and that can surely only be a good thing? Everything plummeting, millions and millions jabbed a week, my parents hopefully soon to be protected after their jabs... just feels like a matter of time now doesn't it? Fingers crossed.. *touch wood*

It does seem like a big decrease for one day. So you may be right about the glitch HP. However In the past when there has been such a large drop in numbers it has tended to be on a Monday when there has been a delay in test results because of the weekend.
It seems unusual to have such a drop during the week.

I agree with caution and staggered re-opening, but the media were quite happy to go overboard last week about the prospect of vaccinations doubling which itself will have increased a sense we've finished.

I just don't think the media understand the data. They should read @Healdplace and @roubaixtuesday more.

I tend to agree with you but I still feel it's rather absurd that here we are sitting on another nice weekend yet we can't again do anything and Easter again a write off.
You say over cautious, absolutely it is.
25 million and all the vulnerable nearly jabbed, that's a lot of people. Shouldn't we be expecting more freedom now?
Yet we are 3 months off any "normality"and still have severe restrictions.

I really do worry about the late teens and early 20s etc the affect on their mental health on all this and not being able to go out for 15 months.
The government has got a lot of things right but its brushing the suicides and mental health problems under the carpet. I'm in my 40s and it fucked me up last year to the extent I couldn't function.
This will no doubt come in after the post covid review and they should be rightly held accountable on that and other failings they have got wrong.

Until a new variant comes along and changes the game again..

Really hoping we can drive down the numbers as fast as possible to drop the chance of a serious new variant taking hold and causing chaos again.

Going well so far this year and I'm looking forward to a good summer. Need to start planning a load of things to make the most of it!

What is it with people obsessed with nee variants ? Seems to be a few on here. Why not look forward to the good times that are coming back rather than mithering yourself about something that probably or more than likely wont happen?

im a glass half empty bloke but some people make me look like the most optimistic man on earth
