The Conservative Party

I actually believe that people accept the deaths and the diasasters because to acknowledge that Johnson is what he is- a liar, a fool, a manipulator, a grossly irresponsible and incompetent moron - is to acknowledge that they were duped into voting for Brexit.

He was and is Brexit. As the article says,it could never have happened without him and his support. His wry smiles and chuckles reassured people who didn’t understand Brexit that it would actually be ok. So to turn on him now and recognise the charlatan and con artist that he is is to admit that you got fooled and correspondingly to admit your own stupidity in the referendum and after.

Human nature will not allow that. So he gets a free pass for anything he does and the country crumbles around his erect Union Jack.
Well, he isn't going to improve anytime soon so we all better assume the brace position. I wonder what it will take?

What problem? I just think this "shared cultural values" thing is historical and present nonsense. The nearest we ever came to it as a nation was the postwar consensus and Thatcher wrecked that, not immigration.

The nearest we came to it was the first two years of the First World War.

As for the post war consensus that was product of shared cultural values that emerged once the First World War destroyed the old order, then the great depression and then the Second World war.

Thatcher? Destroying the post war consensus? You'll get no argument from me, but immigration did too.

Why?

Because the welfare state was a contract between the people and the state. Healthcare paid for by general taxation. National Insurance, you paid in and when needs must you drew down. And, of course, there was the housing ladder.

Immigration destroys that contract, that is a simple fact. You might be okay with it, others are not, and they have a point regardless if it's blurted out by arseholes and bigots for their own devices.

I think you've sussed the "problem" there.

"Right wing press have divided us by talking about shared values." Whereas we should be united by celebrating diversity.

United by celebrating diversity!!

I'm a left wingers, but this nonsensical sloganism is probably THE reason we fail, we construct them to avoid reality, to avoid the truth. It's no wonder the electorate reject us time and again.

Why not try these for size? Orwell knew a thing or two about the left's fetish for twisted meaning.

War is Peace / Freedom is Slavery / Ignorance is Strength.

And if we're in to aphorisms.....Celebrating diversity is a great night out, but home is where the heart is.

You started it, with the nonsense about the press dividing us with shared values.

Although mate, Brexit so far has been surprisingly OK hasn't it. Yes some border teething troubles, but we have a tariff-free trade deal that many (including me) thought was impossible and the world continues to spin. We've got our shit together on vaccinations in super record time and demonstrated at a swoop what a bureaucratic, lethargic mess the EU has become.

The future for the UK is actually a lot brighter than it seemed likely only a year or two ago.

Surprisingly ok?
Exports down just 60% and one of our home nations cut off from the rest in terms of trade.
Why would a tariff free trade deal be impossible? It’s the very minimum we should have been trying to secure.
Our vaccine success is a cause for celebration but it’s really fuck all to do with Brexit in spite of the government’s attempts to link the two.

Looking at the stuff yesterday on what wrong with the EU on vaccines, it was their mistake to trust AZ and Pfizer about supply, and, bluntly, the UK gazumped the EU.

The EU were naive in thinking that everyone was going to have the attitude that we’re all in this together rather than looking after number one. With Trump in charge over there and Johnson over here there really was no prospect it was going to be any different and the EU should have known.

And AZ are extremely naive in thinking that their actions won't come back to bite them many times over in future.

No, it has not been surprisingly OK. It’s been a car crash. It lead directly to this hard right government of idiots and arselickers who caused 100,000 deaths through their incompetence. It’s lead to the country being divided down the middle and everything being framed by the culture war it ignited. It’s made us an international laughing stock and put is into a position where the government is manufacturing fights with the EU to vindicate their stance. And it’s going to lead to a huge long term reduction in post pandemic GDP which will hurt us all.

it has not been “surprisingly ok”. It’s been pretty fucking far from OK. It’s been a disaster for five years. Next thing in the pipeline will be the gradual breakup of the UK. The fact that we managed to roll our vaccines out a bit quicker than many European countries is nothing to do with Brexit apart from in the simple minds of Express readers.

I saw the tweet - it was a joke - he had the Welsh flag as a background with comment along the lines of "as flags in the background are in vogue so here's mine"

This is what happens when the new DG is installed and he is a Tory donor to the tune of £400k.

Other channels should be looking to poach all the BBC on line talent - leave them with tongue tied bungling amateurs and see how its gets along then, Tim Davie can have the honour of ruining and causing the collapse of the BBC

Yeah I saw it too. Hugh clearly doesn't realise that poking fun at the Government is forbidden.
