Why are England so toothless as an international team?

I broke a cardinal rule, last night, and watched 40 mins-ish(?) of the game vs Scotland. I got seriously bored and fell asleep. This is not the first time this has happened and the reason why I stopped watching England play. At the moment it draws me with the temptation we have Our Lads making the bulk of the team, but it's all so flat!

It's not even just Southgate that falls for this curse! It's probably been about 15 years since I've watched a set of England games as they're almost carbon copies of each other despite the personnel changes.

Why is this and how does this terrible cycle get broken??

Get a top class manager who wont be a yes man to the fa and the press/media. Never going to happen.
 
Fear of failure is a major factor. Management and players. They end up losing confidence and courage.
Take the semi-final of world Cup against Croatia. Played with some belief after going up early in the 1st half, but as soon as the 2nd half started they reverted to negativity, nervousness and headless tactics.
Hoping to win, rather than being proactive to ensure they do.
As I say, this all comes down to fear of failure.
The only way to beat it is to have a long term plan in place to change the way the English see how football is played, and follow the fucking thing, no matter the ups and downs.
Out of touch wankers running the game die off, but are replaced by new out of touch wankers making the same stupid counterproductive decisions.
English football is a lot like the nation as a whole; stuck in the past, refusing to face up to the present, and future.... so continue living in the outdated past!!

Tl;dr.... We are never going to win anything, ever!!
 
Compare to Roberto Mancini with his personal and professional approach to managing Italy.

England have team suits yet Southgate dresses as a scruff setting no example nor exhibiting any leadership qualities in his actions or words. To hear him and see his management style is akin to watching a poor schoolboy team coach.

Southgate is an FA poodle and mediocracy personified.
 
You produce good players. You also produce players who are labelled world class who just aren't. If you convince yourself you have a team of world class players, your expectations are very high. World class players deliver when it matters. The fact you never seem to shows you they ain't. You also have problems finding your best selection. I couldn't believe Foden got taken off, maybe play him and Greelish? Kane is a fucking man down for England. Simple as that. If Waisty gets a balance you will improve, but not to win it. That's as daft as me thinking we could make the Semis. You're just not good enough. After the Croat game, I couldn't believe how that performance was getting talked up. It was tedious, slow, lacked real pace and incisive movement. He needs to change it, like Clarke had to. He thought we played well on Monday, we didn't. Southgate needs a performance against the Czechs. That means changes. He makes them or he's toast..
 
England are generally excellent at youth levels, when age group sides grow and develop together, but there seems to be a real disconnect from there to the senior side, where short-termism, fear, commercialism and cults of personality seem to be the dominant cultures.
No serious football country would allow individuals like Beckham or Rooney to call the shots and decide how many caps they are going to get in order to boost their personal ‘brands’
 
The FA, an antediluvian organisation, more interested in a safe pair of hands than someone who would demand a root and branch reform.
Don’t forget, it it wan’t for a stupid display of greed the manager woudn’t be Southgate, it would be Allardyce!


Of the teams that won the Under 17 and Under 20 world cups only Foden has become an England regular. Calvert Lewin and Sancho (who wasn’t in the U17) finals) are squad members.
