to me its the fact that barca still mention messi and regard him as their player still, both on social media and on their website

to the casual fan who doesnt know messis contract expiry date, it would look like as though he still plays for them

also looking at barca who as a club have not even made a statement acknowledging messi is a free agent, it suggests their confidence that they think he will stay
That's called denial and unwilling to accept the situation.

So Barca are off loading player after player yet they've signed 3 players on frees and these players all wanted to sign for Barca for the love of the club?

I'm sure these players agent's knew that Barca are skint, that they are releasing players and that the Messi situation is, for want of a better word, messy.

Like I've alluded to countless times, they've had since January to thrash out a new deal, nothing to do with him being away for the Copa America, a happy Messi would have resigned in a heartbeat, the fact that he hasn't tells you quite a lot.

Absolutely, I think he’s given them a deadline and I would suspect it’s 12th July

Which is the same exact issue as FFP - it keeps the current top clubs at the top, as they have the biggest income from winning, sponsorship etc.

As a friendly, local, trillionaire, if I want to buy my local corner shop and get it to be bigger than Tesco, I can do. If I want to turn my local team into a CL winner, I'm not allowed to unless it's done organically over about 50 years.

If clubs really want to reduce spending, ban any payments from buying or selling clubs to agents. Say Dortmund get £100m for Haaland, Mino will get about £50m from the two clubs. Far better for football if Dortmund got £120m - it costs the buying club less and the selling club have more to invest in more players or improving their club. Agents work for players, so no idea why clubs ever got dragged into a situation where they need to pay a middle man huge sums.

ah yeah that’s a fair shout maybe if a new Owner buys a club and willing to spend big if that owner puts the money in upfront for player plus will not take anything out the club till he sells up could be a way.. yeah it’s difficult maybe go back to before ffp and don’t have a transfer window let that window be always open..

Still not the thread for this discussion

new update on wage bill reductions, they're really not scared of forcing it through any means necessary

Desperation has set in, time is running out for them and they know it. Without Messi they are in even more of a pickle. This is the last roll of the dice. After this there is know where left to go

Barca’s accountants and consultants must be running on over drive atm trying to shove square pegs instead of numbers .

This thread has turned from the Messi thread to how utterly cattle trucked FC Barcelona are. I’m not complaining one bit either as it’s hilarious after decades of living beyond their means whilst everybody else is forced to marvel at how great they are.
yeah its funny to watch, theyre trying so hard to reduce the wage bill, looks like messi will be a free agent for a bit longer

They have created a situation, of the pretence of everyone keeping their word. Or rather, being seen to keep their word. The first one to blink, unravels the lot, but is also the scapegoat.

Last summer messi snapped, handed in his notice, announced henwas off and unleashed criticism of the board. Fucking shitshow, can't do that at Barcelona pal, the lot ganged up on stopping him leaving, ready to destroy his legacy, leak his countract, etc etc. Tebas, barcelona, the spanish media, the cules, the lot.

New president comes in on a promise to keep messi and a message of love. And has taken it on himself to speak for messi, what money he will accept, what project he needs, that he wants to stay, and that he will make it happen. That's his word now.

Messi has said he will honour his contract, not speak to any clubs before the end, and decide his future after. The copa is now the only focus. In some ways, kept his word. Said nothing to deny Laporta's claims on his behalf, said nothing to confirm them.

Tebas has claimed barcelona need to lower wages, if they want to sign messi, or any other players.

Pep has consistently said, when asked, messi should finish his career at Barca. Suggesting that we are bot interested, and unlikely to try lure messi away from where he 'belongs'.

So it is all on Laporta and Barcelona now. If he pulls it off, and messi ends up there, without tebas yielding, and us not getting drawn in publicly, everyone has kept their word.

If not, a case of who blinks first.
If Laporta is furst to suggest keeping messi wont work, messi looks at his options, city/pep publicly goes after him (may well already have done behind the scenes obvs)
If Messi goes first, he wanted to stay but it is clear things are tough and both Barcelona and He need to move on, City can then again publicly engage, laporta tried, tebas remained firm
Or, we 'put an offer in' as messi is now a free agent for some time, and messi is tempted, then as above. Which i doubt would happen, we seem to be staying well out of this one till all the dust settles.

perfect summary, anyone looking into this thread should read this

Barcelona simply can't afford to resign him at the costs involved so if he's still playing for them come the start of the season it's because he's taken one of the biggest pay decreases in the history of the game or Barcelona have fudged the accounts and something underhand has taken place.
I know which one my money is on...

By City saying and doing nothing it puts even more pressure on Barca lol. The fear of what might be makes them more desperate and more likely to get it wrong and make more financial mistakes. It’s like a slow motion car crash
