Italy v England | Euro 2020 Final

What will the result be?

Everything in the garden is lovely, according to Henry Winter and most other journos. Southgate is the man to lead us for the foreseeable (he is apparently more popular than Churchill now, says a poll), and England can only get better. The team achieved a near-miracle by losing narrowly in a major European tournament. It was all so wonderful and thrilling.
Compare all this (bits of it may be partly true) with City reaching a major European club competition final in Porto. All we heard was "Pep fails again to win the big one", etc, etc. No one said "City can only get better" or "Have a great chance next time".
The difference is that English journos see the national team through rose-tinted specs, and City with a jaundiced eye, looking for negatives.
Can we have equal treatment please?
Probably not.
I touched on this in another post (first paragraph) and it's no surprise to read what you've posted.
England fans are conditioned to failure so as soon as they see a team reaching a semi or a final its good enough for them and they will stick with Southgate for as long as Southgate wants to stay. Style of play matters not one jot to them
They fail to see that we could achieve much more with a less cautious manager who can get the best out of the riches of talent at their disposal.

You cannot practice for a situation like Saka found himself in last night the eyes of the wprld on him and the consequences of missing

That isn't what I said. What I did say is Southgate watched them take them in training and they were the best. Nobody can add the pressure of a real game in training no matter what age or how experienced the player

I kind of agree, but I still think they should be put on the list and told to get on with it. Surely it's not the right thing to do to let some enthusiastic kid go ahead because he wants to, when you have top class established strikers on the field that should be doing the job.

Notably two of the players he brought on just before the end specifically for the job missed their pens. I haven't read the thread but all week I haven't been able to get excited about it. I've said all along if we come up against a half decent side we'll lose, I think Southgate is too defensive, I don't think he knows when to change things when it's not working (i.e. most of the 90 and certainly the whole of the second half, and I don't think we have players who work well together. Maguire, for instance, was more interested in trying to get up the field so he could get the goal and the glory, he's not a good defender in my opinion. Phillips looked knackered after an hour, Kane did nothing again and Mount, I think there are better choices ahead of him. But as for penalties, to leave the responsibility on the kids shoulders is just plain wrong, you're asking for trouble. Saka looked scared to death.

He did but I'm sure if when reality bit if he'd have said to Southgate's he didn't fancy it he would have changed him. Perhaps if the morons who abuse anyone who misses a chance or a penalty shut up more would not only volunteer to take one but be more relaxed and might actually score.

A Sky Sports reporter just said some young England Players had a "phenomenal" tournament and included Saka and Sancho amongst others, you can not make it up.
Saka had a decent 10m v Czech Rep. But then the London centric media started the with bullshit… trying to convince us that he was outstanding. I’m sorry, I just see a modern day Aaron Lennon or Luke Chadwick. Sancho contributed nothing in the tournament, save for a mazy run across the pitch…. Once. Our man of the tournament was Walker 100%

Or they have this silly live in with Southgate you watch the rats turn when it goes wrong ........... look what they did to Bobby Robson in 1990 in a matter of weeks they wrote vile horrible stuff about him pre Italia 90 even while it was going on then creeped up to him when we got to the semis ............. the tools are pandering to the plastic England fans who are happy at anything because they ain’t got a clue .......... had they all seen last night for what it really was then these media rats wouldn’t be given Southgate any praise

my god it was shambolic and they cannot see it .......... oh another heroic penalty loss rather than the shambles it was ........ letting a19 year old kid take that much pressure on :( what the hell is that gonna do for his confidence the poor sod ........

I have nothing against Saka he is a very promising player. And I feel for him after the miss
But I don't understand why he was playing in front of Sancho,Foden, Grealish.

I can't see it.
He is not ready he should be playing for the U21 .
Its like the need for some kind of new hero was the reason Southgate played him so much.
Agree. Promising but behind the other three at this stage. He looked totally lost last night. Such a needless shame such a young player was exposed to penalties.

Grealish and Foden were under-used in the tournament. Neither has truly established their England credentials yet, unfortunately, but could potentially star in the WC given the opportunity. It’s up to the manager to know everyone capabilities and nurture them accordingly.

One reporter on Sky Sports News at lunchtime said Sancho had an ‘outstanding’ tournament

Sky gave him 8

I am truly confused [emoji848]

All the media I've seen today has been on how unlucky Engerland were.

Very little in congratulations for Italy being the best team in the tournament.
No that's true but I still don't think that reflects what us ordinary folk think, after all the media is just what a few people decide gets published or aired these days. It's just a form of entertainment.

In any case, the England team were unlucky. Unlucky they had Southgate as manager.

Will we ever get to know the real reason why Phil wasn't used as much. Did Saka do any better. Sakas good ge came in a match with not much riding on it. Was Phil's downfall due to the rag pricks giving Southgate ideas. One thing I do know The way Phil plays his football wins trophies, alot of them. The way Southgate plays doesnt.
I’d just love to have seen him play more. His international emergence was one of my big hopes. However, the reality mirrors his development under Pep up to a year ago. As with Pep, Southgate won’t give him a regular opportunity until he’s staked an indisputable claim in the few games he plays.

So far he simply hasn’t done that. He’s just one of the pack in England’s deck of cards. So, in the meantime, he dines on crumbs.

In my view he’s potentially the best of the competing bunch. Up to now, though, has yet to show that in an England shirt. Decent performances but nothing at all outstanding.

Sterling should have took the initiative and demanded he was going to be the 2nd taker, that is the level he is at and its something fans expected to see.

Raheem: "Hey Gareth, you've seen me in training along with Steve Holland and we both know my record is not as good as others in the squad but I insist, in fact I demand I take the 2nd penalty. You also know I I've done it before in a high stakes shootout against Chelsea in a LC final and I deserve it because I've not let you down this tournament. Also it is something the fans expect to see.

Gareth: You know I make the decisions with Steve and you knew the criteria before the game. Aside from that what about your record since the Chelsea shoot out Raheem? What have fans got to do with anything?

Raheem: Well I've scored 1 out of 5 since then but this means more.

Gareth: Fuck off (but phrased politely)

I wouldnt say England were unlucky. After 20 minutes England sat back, invited the Italians on to them and resorted to hoofball. Nothing unlucky about that !

Mancini tweeted his team after 20 minutes and southgate didnt have a clue what to do after that.

England werent unlucky.

What Southgate (or Pep or most other managers) says at a presser should be taken with a pinch of salt. We simply don’t know how the penalty takers were chosen, who came forward and who didn’t.

My original comment was in response to a post about Saka being racially abused on the internet and of a video showing the some English "fans" kicking the shit out of some Italians.

Now i obviously didn't use the correct grammar for some of you, but i think i let my feelings known in my subsequent post.

So how you can accuse of being racist is insulting and out of order and i think it's probably you who's ill educated for you to make an accusation like that!
Get off your high horse, re-read and re-think what l said. Then perhaps you can reply sensibly.
