The focus of every headline is that he has taken a 50% pay cut. Not the length of his deal, not the overall amount of the deal, not how tebas has flipped. And every main news outlet is going with the same, which would read as a bit of a press release. Good timing for Barcelona.

I suppose it does Laporta no harm having that out there while negotiating pay cuts with other players. Hey look, if messi can cut his wages by 50%!

They will still be paying him long after he has hung up his boots, he is NOT taking any pay cut.

I think you are missing my point. It’s not just about KDB or Haarland - once you move a couple of players into a much higher bracket the pack - other players shift their relativities so the wage bill goes up circa 40 per cent overall. Once word got around that Haarland was on 400 or 500k per week every member of the squad would demand an increase - not to 400k but more than they are presently on because if they are on half of what Kev is on , say -£150k they’d now want half of what Haarland is on £200k City cannot afford for that to happen,

Barca Could have a situation in 3,4 and 5 years time where their highest earner isn’t even registered to play for them… how fucked up is that.
 
City couldn’t offer 5 years @500k a week, would of been terrible business by us, good on Messi for staying at one club although it’s clearly not just for the love of Barca. Good news all round.
