Professionalism. We're 2-0 up and about 99% sure to win the game. We've got potentially 63 games to play this season and that takes a lot of energy to do so. Going all out now instead of managing the game through possession and letting them run would be somewhat pointless.

It's not even about contact. The player is judged by whether they were in control of their body and whether their lack of control caused a potentially dangerous situation.

You might remember that Kompany once got a straight red against Nani even though Nani jumped over the tackle, because he was adjudged to have lost control of his body in the tackle and created a situation where he coul;d have injured someone else.
