NW AND GREATER MANCHESTER HIGHLIGHTS

You know it is a good day when even Stockport are down by 44 week to week!

Indeed Manchester on 159 is the highest GM score today. The lowest top score in weeks.

Trafford today was the only borough to be up week to week. There are some quite large drops

Manchester down 135 week to week and Wigan down 113 are the stand outs!

North West is UP today by 103. Though one of the lower rises in the regions. London was up 515.

But GM is actually down by 90 whilst NW rises day to day.

GM on 1004.Lowest number in three weeks.

Week to week NW is down from 4129 to 3222. A fall of 907. One of the biggest.

From that 907 GM takes more than its expected share being down 533 - well over half that number.

So all round a very good day for GM - including Stockport.

Only Trafford slightly underperformed and its overall Pop Score lead was cut from 6 to 3 by Stockport's better day.

Again by the way as Zoe predicted in the numbers I posted earlier.

201 all settings deaths - it was 191 last Wednesday

30, 597 cases - up 3969 on yesterday.

But down from 38, 975 last Wednesday. A fall of 8378.

England only:- 22, 078 - up 2339 on yesterday.

V last week 29, 286 - so down 7208 on that

More good news, and without reading too much into a single day, the weekly figures for hospitalisations and deaths are showing distinct signs of turning the corner to follow cases

All of this showing how it's increasingly difficult to predict the shape of the epidemic as we've been at R~1 for many weeks now.

The combination of behavioural changes, immunity building through infection and vaccination, and likewise waning over time makes it far harder to know where we're headed.

But for sure, down is better than up going into winter. And this time last year it was obvious a disaster was approaching which Vallance and Whitty were mocked for predicting (their warning actually turned out to be far too optimistic in the end). Disastrous scenarios looking far less likely this year.

ENGLAND HOSPITAL SUMMARY

Unfortunately the news from England hospitals is less good today.

For the North West and particularly NE & Yorkshire.

The numbers were down everywhere else but UPin both these areas - North West by 39 to 972 and NE & Yorkshire by 78 to 1279.

Yorkshire now the highest region as both London and Midlands had good falls today.

Indeed without the two northern regions going up today there would have been a good fall everywhere today.

As it was the falls everywhere else mean numbers still fell day to day by 38 to 6306.

But it could have been so much better had the two northern regions not added 117.

As it was today has just 4 more in hospital than last Wednesday 6306 V 6302 7 days ago.

The same issue impacted ventilator numbers.

These are up 22 today to 910 and up 14 week to week from 896.

However, London and Midlands both fell

Again it was NE & Yorkshire - up 16 today to 176 and North West - up 5 to 118 - that was why these numbers even went up at all as that is 21 of the 22 rise between them.

HEADLINE;- England hospital numbers are NOT rising week to week by any real numbers and IF this proves a one off in the NW and NE & Yorkshire and they fall in next day or two (as they may well) then all will be well again. There is nothing at all otherwise in ths data suggesting an NHS under pressure scenario right now. The number in the whole of England today (6306) is only 70 more than two weeks ago today (6236).

The total number of people in hospital with coronavirus in the UK currently stands at 8,340 - it has been over 8,000 for eight of the past nine days.
Before this, the last time figures surpassed the 8,000 mark was in early March.

But posters are still playing this down as if it's all gone away and blaming the media ?

As far as I’m aware though, the people in hospital generally aren’t as poorly as in other waves.

By the way vaccinations have fallen off a cliff. Only 83,000 doses in total in the UK today. I had not looked at these recently.

Yesterday

'Certainly no sign of any real reason for concern.'
Indeed as I said it could be a one off thing. Ventilators follow this pattern quite a lot. One days numbers can change quite quickly.

But when the two measures - patients in and those on ventilators - are down in the other big regions and both rise in tandem here on one day it is worth nothing. Especially with NE & Yorkshire which was much the bigger rise today in both measures. And was the region to have the most England deaths today too.

I normally do a fuller hospital summary but am not doing today because of the match.
