this loss wasnt sterling's fault. to pin it on him is to ignore the other issues , and he didnt play on his fav position

The problem is not even whether he plays bad or not, the problem is he is, by far, the worse offensive option in the team, so whenever he plays, you know he's taking a spot from a player that is better. For example, today he didn't play that bad, but if he wasn't here, Foden would've played and I am sure we would've at least tied the game.

Pep has some blame on this certainly, but it's difficult to bench a player that was a star and that has the 2nd highest salary from the team. If you bench him, it's gonna be impossible to sell him (or recover him miraculously). Selling him is a win for everyone.

Not a dig, but can anyone remember when he last had a good game for us? One where you've come away and said Raheem was excellent today.

Liverpool away last season?

He really hasn't been the same since the miss against Lyon in the CL for me

On a technical level, he's comfortably our worst player. Funny thing is, that's always been the case. Sterling is a player with many attributes; in Pep's second season here he was an unbelievable asset because more often than not we were playing a high-placed, transition based game. He's always been adept at timing those runs into the box and scoring those "poachers" goals. Nobody can ever take that skill set away from him.

But, he is never, ever, ever, going to be a technically gifted footballer. Playing with his back to goal; killing the ball dead with a delightful first touch; quick touch and move passing in tight spaces, of these facets he's never been capable. And sadly, our game under Pep has evolved to the point where his limitations are impossible to mask. Couple that with him seemingly being in a psychological rut, and it's a perfect storm for prolonged, poor form.

At this point, he doesn't warrant a new contract; and he'd probably be the first to admit that. It's going to be tough but if this is to be his last season, I hope he can have some meaningful impact one way or another.

And I will say this. Whatever happens from here on in, he leaves us a success story. He's contributed to three title winning seasons, his productivity invaluable to us, and was a key component in one of the most electrifying City teams we've ever seen.

This is a fair assessement.

What happened to him after that header at Arsenal back in February? He's not been the same since that miss vs. Lyon but it was after he scored at Arsenal that his form really went off a cliff. He has 2 goals in 24 appearances since that day (3 assists). I don't think that kind of form is anywhere near good enough anymore. As others have said, he's always been limited technically but it's often been something he makes up for with a fuck-tonne of goals. Now those have dried up, he's looking worse by the week. I love him, and I understand why a great tournament with England maybe gave Pep pause for thought about getting rid, but I think it's time we moved him on.

I get the feeling with him that he doesn’t want to be here. Probably feels squeezed out and the situation is getting worse by the month. He got lucky playing in the CL final, when frankly he didn’t deserve it and whilst he had a good summer for England, he has reverted back to the ineffective player we have been seeing for over a year. I think it’s time for him to move on and I would be looking to do a deal with someone who may want him.

Seems to be getting worse every week now.

I’d loan him out in Jan for his sake and ours, hopefully get his career back on track.

That's how to be critical of a player's current performances without making a tit of yourself.

So first of all people were naming these matches in an attempt to go at Ake and now people are using the same games to criticise Sterling
This was a long time narrative once upon a time for Gundogan too. If Gundogan played, we lost.

How right they proved to be..

there just isn't a single opponent i'd like to see sterling against because our team is weaker with him in it, simple as
