Rats

its when they nest it becomes a problem, very soon you have an infestation on your hands, they dont always eat the poison,if your using the green grain they sometimes store it in little heaps,if you find a heap hidden then the mouse /rat is nesting no more than 10 feet away,we had a nest in a watering can in the shed, the rat trap is prob the best thing but rats are clever they will by pass it with caution and not touch the food for a good while where as mice are straight in for it

none of the above
we have no pets
no chickens anywhere around here
Sorry to hear that blue44 it's an awful situation to be in, next door is empty so they came into our house via the loft.
Strongly recommend pest control experts as you don't want it/them dying in the house, the stench is horrendous.
Pest control use a poison which gets into their system and they need to get out into the air so they die outside !
Good luck !

wished i hadn't posted

thanks for all the valid replies

its no laughing matter
We had them in the garden coming in from next door. Bought rat killer from B&Q and placed it in a piece of pipe big enough for a rat but too small for cat or dog. Pipe was placed under a bush so hidden which they prefer. No sign of them after a few weeks and some months later neighbour found 2 decomposing rat bodies in their compost heap. Presumably where they had gone off to die. Bait had to be replaced a few times after they started taking it.

Was in Nice a few years ago on a Sunday night, most of the bars and restaurants started to close around 11pm. We found one that stayed open and had a few beers, the streets were really dark without hardly any fluorescent lighting. As we left the bar there were hundreds of rats out on the street, was like a moving carpet, not a pleasant scene.

great idea the pipe and stops the rain spoiling the bait

We realised we have one or several last weekend
bought poison which it or they keep taking
but they come back for more

just been and bought traps

its an awful feeling knowing they're there
Commiserations, it's shit, the thought of having to kill a living thing, especially after you've caught it on a sticky trap then having to bash it's brains in with a Cricket bat. (No I didn't) get a Plummer Terrier or a ferret.

It’s always good to have stray cats out and about in the neighbourhood. We’ve got some around my way, and we never see rats or mice.

Rats do actually serve a purpose in the ecosystem. They are good at cleaning up things that otherwise lays idle and do spread seeds that can allow different types of vegetation to flourish. But you wouldn’t want to encounter them ip close as they do carry a lot of diseases because their immune systems (like bats) are incredible and they don’t get ill from the diseases they encounter so just carry them.

Get a barrel half fill it with water make a ramp leading upto the top, then get a big coke bottle run some string through it and cover it in chocolate paste, fuckers try climbing onto the bottle and drown. I do it with mice not tried rats though haha.

Rat poison can be passed through the food chain if a Fox, Cat, Owl, Dog ingests a rodent that has eaten it.

Putting poison down may kill the predators designed by nature to keep rodent numbers in check.
I asked the pest control man if a cat eating a poisoned rat or mouse would be affected and he said no

You need to find out where they are getting in and block it off with chopped up glass and a good filler or sand and cement If one of them dies in you house it absolutely stinks.
me and my dad and a good look around my house last thurs and frid inside and outside, and sealed up anything, however small.

i know only to well the stench of a dead rat
worse than that is in summer and fly's come too
it is horrific.
