Club Brugge (H) - CL - Post-Match Thread

Re: Cancelo - playing him in midfield would make him less effective as starting at fullback with a team of midfielders gives him a bit more space to play the way he does imo. He does some mad stuff for sure. He wasn't getting much help defensively in the first half which is why his side looked so open.

Grealish does look a little one note playing wide. Needs a touch more directness for me but is basically doing fine.

Movement was ok first half i thought. Lots of early runs not picked out through the middle

Bernardo won us that game, he was excellent. And we were much better when Jesus and Sterling came on, thought the two they replaced were bobbins.

Brugge were very poor over the two games, we could have really twatted them tonight but we were sloppy in the final third (again).

Felt like the crowd struggled to get up for the game and were very flat. Still plenty of empty seats despite it nearly selling out n’all.

Disagree about the empty seats, only ones I could see were nearly all in corporate.

Really enjoyed that tonight: just the job after Saturday. We didn’t ever look like scoring then, but tonight there was always danger. Stones, Cancelo, Silva, Foden, and Sterling and Jesus when they came on were all fabulous, and Rodri was tidy too.
Just what the doctor ordered that. Gabby’s finish real strikers instinct.
Unlike some of the other comments I’ve seen I don’t think the final score line flattered us at all.
In fact my only blue moan tonight is that I will never again get drawn in to buy one of the appalling vegan sub rolls. I do like my veggie food, but I’ll be back on the chicken balti pies at the next available opportunity!

Bernardo was excellent again, also thought Cancelo was excellent going forward, our best attacking option in the first half for me. Sterling had a big impact when he came on, playing on the right where again I think he is most effective, and what a finish from Jesus!

True about Sterling but lets face it Bruges were knackered by then. Can Sterling do it from the start ?

- Fairly comfortable in the end, though we never quite clicked in the first half.

- Like at the start of last season, I don't think there's anything massively wrong with us, but our pacing in games isn't quite right somehow. I said at half time it's like we are both too slow and rushing it all at once. It's just a matter of tweaking, I think, once we do get going we could go on some run, but it's so vital we don't let Chelsea pull away with it.

- Bernie and Rodri maintain their run as being probably the most important players for us, followed closely by Foden.

- Cancelo and Mahrez must be up there with being two of the most frustrating players to watch in world football. They go from being sublime to wasteful, sometimes in the same minute, quicker than any players I've seen.

- Raz scored! Raz scored! Raz scored!

- Grealish was ok, but I really want to see a player be a bit more swashbuckling. I think he's doing what he's told, and learning a system, and presumably slowly becoming a better player for it, but he's losing that edge of players and fans not knowing what he's going to do next.

- PSG now have to come to us and win, which will hopefully make for an interesting game.

- I quite like CL games in the crowd. I was surrounded by new faces, new accents and younger people.

I looked up at the screen at one point and could see the white seats that spell out CITY around ESL1 where I sit. From wheee I was sat could also see chunks of seats in SSL3 CBL3 and FSL1.

Good crowd, I reckon about 47,000 (which would have been a full 2003-2015 Etihad) but it won’t be the attendance that’s given. But just don’t get why our planner says there were so few tickets left when I could clearly see a good number of seats.

Not a big deal, just something that bugs me. Do City hold them back? Give them to ticket sites that don’t get sold?

I suppose a better question might be does he want to do it, we know how good he can be, we've seen it, I'm just not sure that he really wants to be at the club any longer? Maybe he has finished with City in his mind, who knows but I certainly think he is still a great player just not playing well for us right now - well apart from tonight!

It was Pep calling out the ritual, continual, and permanent in built bias in favour of the history clubs at the expense of City. And good for him for doing it. “Believe me, everything we have done here we have done ourselves. Nobody helps us do anything. Nobody”

Unless I’ve missed it , so far this week, this is the first game against United that he hasn’t spent a few days begging them up. If so, good on him again.

Im thinking maybe he has realised the level of corruption in football once you step outside of the red shirts and two Spanish clubs and Bayern.

Came out swinging tonight and did so cleverly. Got the point across in such a way that nobody can fine him or call him out for what he said.
I knew exactly what it was. It was more why now

don’t tell me he has only just worked it out this week because that’s clearly bollocks

so. Why now?
