Coronavirus (2021) thread

I don’t disagree and I’ve had 3 shots as well but, as with many things in life, they’re putting themselves at risk, which is their call.
As usual, most of the unvaccinated are the poor and/or the non-white community. The answer to that conundrum surely cannot be, you lose your job if you don’t comply? Take the care homes, the places with the greatest need will be the ones with the lowest vaccination take up rates.
Interestingly, the only people in a care home who don’t need to be vaccinated are the residents……

Yet most of the residents will be vaccinated judging by the take up rates in the elderly.

For me it’s fairly simple. There is a new virus, it can cause long term harm and death, hard data is sketchy because it is new but we have a vaccine - several in fact- it will protect you from the worst effects and the vaccine is free. This is not a difficult calculation and people who work in the health sector should know better than most.

In short, I lost patience a long time ago. Same with people cry arsing over masks. No fucking patience for those idiots either.

I really can't see a situation where we're back to square one at all - not one scientist is coming out and saying that the jabs won't work at all. And we're also not in the same place where front line medical staff are running out of masks, or oxygen etc.
They will work but the variant might reduce effectiveness in stopping new cases and that's exactly what happened with Delta. The case wave we had over the summer upto now has been caused by the impact of Delta.

But why do we care about cases? From what I've read Omicron cases seem to be milder so that's great news. The major problem is that Omicron cases don't seem to be mild in people who aren't vaccinated.

The thinking around this still depends on whether you're vaccinated. If you're not vaccinated then like I said the hysteria is probably justified because you're more likely to catch this new variant and it'll probably make you ill.

Pfizer have supposedly upped the UK supplied price from £18 per dose to £22 per dose. If you think about it we'll need something like 40m doses and that's £880m or £100m+ extra.

It's no wonder is it that the pharma lobby was trying to kill off the £2.50 per dose AZ vaccine over the summer....

I think we should all have the booster but I remain highly suspicious of companies like Pfizer, especially with the revelations around malpractice around trials. I'd much rather have the AZ vaccine again although I don't think that's allowed this time.

And Moderna’s CEO has this morning cautioned about how a new vaccine may be necessary as the current ones may not be as effective. Great for their share price of course whilst everyone else tanks…..

I’d much rather have AZ again too - the whole exploitation of fearmongering for commerical gain is sickening

That's interesting . I didn't realise that turning someone into an anti-vaxxer is a potential side effect of the booster.

Here we go again labelling anyone who doesn’t beat the drum as an anti-vaxxer. How can they be an anti-vaxxer if they’re having the jab (as will I, having already had my flu vaccine too).

It is possible to disapprove of the handling of this crisis without being an anti-vaxxer you know. No wonder people are so polarised with that sort of terminology being thrown around like confetti.

Does the 10 day isolation for a positive test start we you initially do the LF test or when you take the PCR test?

Calm down. It was an attempt at humour.

Covid passports come into effect in valencian region of Spain from 3rd December which is good as it'll keep the picks away at least.

Do far this morning I've been to the bank, the post office and a tesco express, not one person wearing a mask (including me) and nobody enforcing it. It's good to see.
Iceland saying they wont enforce so i would asume others will follow, for the record you can receive a fixed penalty although how enforceable that is is another thing, article 6 and 7 under the covid laws are the exemptions 'medical' and article 5 is the right to fair trial which is key as your not having a fair trial with a fixed penalty of £200 so unlikely to succeed in the courts, not my words, from a barrister if anyone knows better

But why do we care about cases?

Because it's a leading indicator of what will follow in hospitals and morgue.

From what I've read Omicron cases seem to be milder so that's great news.

I think this is highly speculative, close to being wishful thinking. Probably best to assume its similar severity until data shows otherwise. SA data from the first province affected shows hospitalisation doubling weekly for the last couple of weeks, which is in line with case growth. But far too early to say anything remotely definitive.

And so it begins….

“ So I think being careful, not socialising when we don't particularly need to”

so says Jenny Harris head of test and trace.

Might be totally wrong but motorists received fixed penalty fines for offences, is that not the same as this?
