Coronavirus (2021) thread

I am 48. Good to see I have not given others the impression I am an oldie.

I currently have Bell's Palsy. Not sure what caused it. Looking at possible causes it is most likely either Covid (my sense of smell and taste were not great for a week or so before my face started to resemble Quasimodo's) or my immune system was in overdrive (had the flu jab two weeks earlier and I take high dose Vit D and Zinc, and had both Covid jabs).

Looking at the Lancet, a report recommends considering not taking mRNA vaccines if you have had Bell's Palsy as the risk of getting it again following an mRNA vaccination is three times more likely. I then looked at the NHS website and it said some people can have three jabs of the same vaccine if it is considered the best option for that person.

I would think vaccination centres will have all three vaccinations (AZ, Pfizer and Moderna). No idea how I can ensure I get AZ or avoid a long winded discussion at the vaccination centre and then walking out with no jab. Would ask my doc but it takes three weeks to get a telephone appointment.
Could you ring 119 and see what they suggest?

I think it depends on your age, isn't the AZ vaccine still banned in the under 40's?

I'm under 40 and had the AZ vaccine before they changed the advice but I'll not be allowed AZ again even though I'd still prefer it.

Otherwise though I think you get what you're given.
I would have taken either main vaccine for my booster but some scientists reckon a combination of vaccines gives greater protection, especially with the spike protein changing a fair bit. Having the 2 AZ and the Pfizer booster probably gives greater protection than 3 AZ jabs.

Had my booster at the weekend.

The nurse went through side effects etc, explained why Pfizer rather then AZ then said that if I wanted AZ they could make arrangements. The impression I got was that those arrangements would be at another time and place, but that was my assumption rather than something they explicitly said.

Good luck.

They are on basically the same level as us. we're on 67.8 they are 67.7.

How France overtook us I'll never know. I guess the threat to not being allowed into Cafe's really worked.
Germany has a population count of 84m and have issued as at 25th November, 143.7 doses per 100 people.

The UK has a population count of 68m and as at 25th November had issued 166.36 doses per 100 people.

Nothing like anywhere near us.

Check the table below.

Here's all the measures for vaccination for the two countries.

Double jabbed is almost exactly the same, on other measures UK ahead.

Our world in Data says otherwise. Fully Vaccinated ( 2 doses ) by population

Our booster program being ahead of there's skew your shots per 100 figure. Fully vaccinated is still classed as double dosed.

when you just compare us to them you can get exact figures from 29th Nov, I had comparisons for other countries with data lag before so was a few points of a percentage out.

UK = 67.98
Germany = 67.83

Your figures are as of 27th January 2021, the ones I am quoting are from 25th November 2021, a lot can (and has) happen in ten months? though I am surprised any Booster jabs were issued back in January?

Have you the link? <- Ignore this @roubaixtuesday

I have just looked at the data/link @grunge has provided.

I think thats just a mobile website issue, probably the start date of the graph.

Yeah, I am aware of different jabs maximising protection. But my rationale is that 3xAZ is better than 2xAZ

Thanks for that. Certainly worth knowing.

The graphs are over time from 27th Jan to 30th Nov. You can see the rates increasing as the rollout proceeds.

Link here.

You can add other countries, and choose other measures ( cases, deaths etc). I think it's the best diy data visualisation for covid. If you have an explore, I'd recommend using 7 day averages for measures rather than daily, much less noise.

AZ isn't being used for boosters. I had 2×AZ and a Moderna booster.
It is if you cannot have the others.

They are mixing the two types deliberately - so if you had AZ you get one of the others - as studies showed the different way they each worked gave the biggest boost to immunity by allowing your immune system to have a different vaccine approach to what you had before I presume.

I had two AZ in February and April and my Pfizer booster about a month ago. Whilst there a patient came in wanting AZ as in the two prior jabs - not Pfizer (did not catch why but I assume not medical grounds as that would have been filtered out on appointment rather than send her there on the day).

A nyhow as I was waiting for the call to get my booster the staff looked up where AZwas being used at that time (for first and second doses) and arranged for herto go there.

I suspect there has to be a very good reason to change the regime but I imagine they will want anyone to have the booster rather than not - even if it is not the different kind they think will work best for you.

Has anyone had three vaccinations of the same vaccine?

Also, any data on the efficacy of having the same vaccine three times?

I ask as I had a double dose of AZ but I also want an AZ booster for medical reasons.
I’ve had 3 Pfizer’s. Absolutely no side effects at all with the second 2. Got a bit of cold like symptoms with the first one after about 48 hours.
Why do you want AZ, if you don’t mind me asking? Looks like the MRNA top up would be by far the most beneficial and, to be honest, you might well struggle to find any AZ knocking about the place. In my region yesterday we did 42000 vaccinations, with 25000 Pfizer, 17000 Moderna and 47 AZ!
