Today's shooting in America thread

I have a dog and a burglar alarm and I’m gone from home for large swaths of time.

I’m not the only one who knows how to use the weapons.

I’m sorry it offends your sensibilities, but I’ll do me, you do you, and I’ll make sure you never have to worry….unless you break in!!

A few posts ago you said you and millions of americans don't intend to use the guns.

And since then you've detailed exactly how you and your family intend to use it.

I vote BLUE. I’m a big fan of law and order. But, when a guy on trial for 3 murders has the weapons charge dropped because the Judge says the statute is “fuzzy,” then you’re directing your ire at the wrong person.

I have paid lots of money and taken plenty of my own personal time to become a marksman (Federal), legally own and conceal carry weapons, and can assure you I’m not the enemy.

Get rid of the cause and you lose the effect. I’d be happy to give up my guns if everyone would, but we both know that’s not happening, right? Therein lies the problem.

Btw, I’m typing this passing thru SFO on Flt 2433 SFO-ORD! You on it???

I just flew in on one of my 787 Qualification flights!
Ha. No but I am off to IAH Tuesday, then DFW Wednesday, then home Saturday. UA or SkyWest) all the way! Very close to getting back to 1K; I’m gonna be right on the edge . . .

How does the 787 handle?

You’d have to be really desperate to break into someone else’s house knowing you stand a good chance of getting shot.

Might sound weird but I never ever consider that there are people out there who are armed. Even if I go to Denver or another big City it never crosses my mind. I’ve never felt the need to be armed and don’t have one by my bed. In over thirty years I’ve witnessed one bar fight (between two brothers) not seen any agro of any sort. Never had anyone call my pint a poof or whatcho lookin at nonsense. England is way rougher than here imo
I bet I could start a riot in your local just by not wearing a hat.

In 35 years of going to bars I’ve only seen one fight too — in Palm Springs, between two women, one at a bachelorette party and another woman who thought the first was trying to pick up her man. I was chaperoning the bachelorettes (I.e. driving their party bus). No guns involved, but I had to take the woman in our party to the hospital after she cut her hand on a beer bottle she’d used on the noggin of the jealous drunk. True story!!

Yeah but the bad guys aren't the only ones who get shot. Loads of people get shot accidentally in homes. The daughters boyfriend climbing up the drainpipe, the son sneaking home after being out drinking or smoking.

1000 children a year are killed by gun accidents in the home.

And all the gun culture does is mean burglars carry guns, so if they do break in you, your dog or you family are more likely to get shot. They go from burglar to armed robber.

Of course that means police are all armed to the teeth. It's not uncommon for people get shot by the police they called to their house because of a disturbance.

Not arguing with you, I knew a girl who got shot to death in that exact way several years ago

I travel to the states a lot,and have lots of friends who are responsible gun owners
and i often go to the range with them.I agree it’s the laws that need reforming.
It would be great if guns were abolished but that’s just not going to happen and even if they were the crimInal fraternity would still have them, just like in the UK.
I understand the second amendment or at least today’s interpretation of it,but I just don’t understand the need to have assault rifles for protection, the clues in the name!

If I lived in the States full time i would have one to go the range and keep at home for the reasons CB has stated,I think theres more likelihood of someone breaking in my house being armed than not.
I’ve a fully licensed shotgun in the UK which I use for clay pigeon shooting but if
someone broke into my house armed with a machete or whatever as is being more and more common I would use it to protect myself and my family if our lives were in danger.

I was the victim of violent crime a number of years back driving a rental car in Miami fortunately no one was seriously hurt because of the evasive action i took.
The same week an unarmed English tourist got shot as he got out of the car to argue with his aggressors.

So if I broke into your house with a machete, how long have I got before you are able to grab the key and go to the locked box / cabinet / cupboard where your gun is and be in a position to challenge me?

“Assault rifle” is, to pardon the pun, a loaded phrase. It’s a handgun you fire from your shoulder, with a longer barrel. The “gun” is exactly the same: semi-automatic.

Fingerprint lock, by my bed, you’re dead in 3 seconds!

Wanna test the thesis?! Haha!
